performer vs performer rpm intake?

Is there a big difference between the two intakes? I'm running a standard performer on my l31 right now and as my car hits third from WOT it stops kinda lame and slowly starts to pulls. But I'm looking for something to make my car pull harder. I'm thinking of swapping intakes, going to an lt4 hot cam, 2800 stall since I'm running stock. 3.73 gears in the rear since I'm running stock 3.42 open right now, and an exhaust system since I'm running stock 305 manifolds and exhaust. 2.5 inch Think the intake will help? Basically the intake will be done in my list of parts. But am wondering if it will help me if I do it sooner or later.

Re: performer vs performer rpm intake?

Do the exhaust first. Dont worry about the intake right now.

Also, you wont notice any difference between 3.73 and 3.42. Posi will help.

Do the cam and intake together when you do. No sense in pulling the intake twice.

Save your money and when you do get a converter, get a good one. I wish I had. Went with a cheap unit and wasted my money.

With gearing, are you running a large diameter tire like 28" or larger? If you are, running a 26" tall tire will be like increasing your gear ratio.

The difference is that the RPM manifold has a higher RPM operating range and it flows better which becomes more apparent as you start modifying the motor.

I agree

Hughes, Coan, Edge are some of the companies that make good converters. Don't just buy one out of a mag either. Call them and see what they would recommend for what you have. It can still be off the shelf but it will be better matched to your combo than just picking an advertised 2400 stall converter you know nothing about. You'll need your car weight, rear end ratio, transmission type, and engine specs. (including cam) when you call.

Re: performer vs performer rpm intake?

I'm not sure on tire spec tight now. I can get those later when I go to the garage. I know exhaust is really holding me back from letting my motor breath. Basicly what I'm wanting to do is make my car pull like a stripped ape. I want something that'll throw me into the back seat untill I let off the go peddle. My buddy took me for a ride in his 04 gto with a 5.7 ls1 stock with only a tune and a stage 3 monster clutch and good god did that thing pull

I chose the Performer RPM Air gap to put it my car. Better performance.

20-25 torque and 15-20 HP gain mid range from 3,000 to 4,500 RPM. 3:43 in the video.

As would most everybody. But as to what to do next, that aint the answer. The gains would not be the same on his motor.

Re: performer vs performer rpm intake?

I like the Performer RPM very much....much like the old Z/28 highrise manifold. It works on most everything from just over basic stock to well warmed up street engines.

I honestly think your right on doing exhaust work first. I got to talking to a friend and he said that the factory 5.0 smog manifolds I have on my engine now are extremely hurting me and causing my motor to fight to expel the exhaust as the rate I'm moving. So I'm hoping yo go to headers next with hopefully 3.5-3" exhaust going back. Then I'm going to do my cam and intake to get this motor a little peppier. All I want is third gear to pull more, since fixing my fuel issue it helps a lot and I can finally get into third but it just doesn't pull like I hoped.

Re: performer vs performer rpm intake?

like they said, put a good header and exhaust system first. It will wake it up a little.
Then do the cam. Maybe a lunati 60111 with alex parts springs and a performer rpm. It will be like a different car!

I've got aleks springs already and am planning on the lt4 hotcam. Is the lunati a better cam?

Re: performer vs performer rpm intake?

I personally like the lunati. I have used them a bunch of times. If your going to run a 2800 stall converter you could even go up a size to the 60112. This is one of my favorite street cams.

Re: performer vs performer rpm intake?

Do exhaust first. Then dive into Cam/Converter. Your intake is fine. Make sure your timing is kicking in right when its supposed to and make sure your carburetor is tuned in perfect or close to good.

So my advice like I said, full exhaust. Hooker 2055s or equivalent, and the Catback of your choice. Pickup a Wideband and see whats happing on that flatspot your experiencing.
