switching from fuel injection to carb fuel pump

Hi I am currently converting my 86 firebird from a v6 to a 350 crate engine with carb I am wondering if I can just disable my intank fuel pump or if I need to take it out if so could some one recommend a kit or something to replace it. I apologize if his has already been posted I could not find anything about it.

No need to mess with the fuel tank. Just use a return-style regulator like the Mallory 4309 to reduce the fuel pressure to the carb.

That would work. I just removed mine and put in a spectre inline one, haven't had a problem.

Yep, definitely works. It's what I did in my 92 when I swapped the V6 for a carb'd 350. 7500 miles later, the only engine problem I've had is a badly bent pushrod.

Just as a word of caution, leaving the in-tank fuel pump in place and adding an inline pump has caused pump failures for some members here. The added restriction of pulling fuel through the in-tank pump can cause the inline pump to overheat and fail.

The only change you need to make when removing the ECM is to provide power to the fuel pump relay. I just wired mine into an empty spot on the fuse block that had power only in Start/Run. You actually don't even need it powered to start the car. There is enough fuel in the bowls to start the engine and run for a few seconds till the fuel pump catches up. That's how I originally had it wired cause it was easier to find a spot in the fuse block that was hot just in Run initally.

Re: switching from fuel injection to carb fuel pump

the way its wired the oil switch provides power while the engine is running, if you wire the relay to the key it will be redundant sources like the factory(good thing) if the relay or OPS fails your pump will run on the other feed
