how to break in a new engine
hey guys, i built my engine a couple months ago and have not installed it yet because i have been so caught up with the body work. this is my first built chevy. i have only done mercedes diesel and classic mercedes engine overhauls before. i don't know how to break in the freshly built engine, and i am very scared that i am going to round off the new cam. the cam did come with a break in procedure but i wont be able to do that until i have a carb tuned for it. i have a holley 670 street avenger carb that i am going to rebuild but i have no idea on how to get a base tune on it. i fear that when cranking the engine over trying to get the carb tuned i am going to round off the cam.
current specs on the engine:
3970010 casting 350 block bored .030 over
stock crank, steel rods, double valvecut flat top pistons should be 10:1 cpr after heads and block being resurfaced
vortec heads with hardened valve springs, molly retainers, hardened spring shims and valve lock nuts (combination of retainer and spring allows for alot more lift over stock)
voodoo 268 276 cam
summit racing stage one dual plane manifold (pretty much a copy of edelbrock performer intake)
shorty headers
ngk platinum plugs, msd distributor, msd coil, and 8mm plug wires
holley 670 street avenger carb
should i just take the engine to my local dyno shop and have them break it in? any advice would be very help to me as a beginner, and any engine builders on here think they can give me a rough power estimate? thanks

well as far as brake in use light valve springs or remove the inner coil if you can to reduce the pressure at the lifter (stock valve springs are fine). use break in oil not an additive. test all your systems for leaks before you start the engine. when you do start it get the engine to 2300 rpm as soon as you can and keep it there for 30 min shut it down let it cool change the oil and drive it easy for about 1000 miles no full throttle or consistent rpm. change the oil and you are good to go.
side note that cam has more lift then vortec heads can handle make sure they mill the valve guide and open the spring seat it is not just changes the springs. looks like a good combo should be fast and fun
my guess is 370HP/405TQ

Re: how to break in a new engine
The tune of the carb shouldn't be a huge issue for break in. It just has to be close enough that it can maintain the 2300 RPM for the 30 minute break in. It's not like you're snapping the throttle or putting the engine under heavy load yet. Stay vigilant during the break in for leaks or anything out of the ordinary.
