Choke light

1987 Iroc Z28 convertible TPI changed to 4bl,stock gm Rochester. Have
changed the choke thermostat, set choke to about 1/8 inch closed and opens fully when hot, adjusted fast idle, engine runs smooth,4 bl kicks in ok. Just can't get my choke light to go off. I also did the jclamp repair on the speedometer and all gages work and changed all bulbs to leds. Replaced the idle stop solenoid to kick up rpms when air is turned on. I don't know if any of these repairs have/would affect the choke light.

Also how many rpms should the idle stop solenoid kick up the rpms when air is turned on.

Thanks

Re: Choke light

The bezel over that bulb may say "Choke", but it's REALLY the "Alt" light.

Change out the alternator.

The solenoid won't "kick up" the idle; doesn't have enough nads for that. It will however, keep the throttle from returning all the way. But that's not its main purpose: mostly, it's there to keep the throttles from slamming shut when you take your foot off the gas, which produces a blast of super-rich exhaust. It's there to hold the throttle open until the RPMs drop to about 1300, at which time it releases and lets the throttle close the rest of the way. It does stay energized when the AC is on however; idle should be around 850 - 900 out of gear w AC on and throttle sitting on the solenoid.

Re: Choke light

I traced the wires to the ac comp. and wired the solenoid to activate when the ac is turned
on. Is this correct or should it have 12 volts applied at all times?

Thanks

No, and no.

The ECM controls it.

Re: Choke light

Ok when I first tested the solenoid power connector it had 12 volts on it with key on. But the solenoid was not activated. When/how does it get activated? And should I wire it back to the lead that was originally connected?

Thanks

Re: Choke light

Check the wires going into the small plug with it running: both should measure basically battery voltage, with the brown one slightly above batt (maybe a half volt or so higher). If you put your red meter lead on the big post of the alt and the black lead on the red batt terminal (AT THE BATT) the meter should show a positive voltage, probably a tenth of a volt or so.

An important question would be, what wiring harness did you use?
