350 bored 30 over 4 bolt main
350 bored 30 over 4 bolt main
Help.. Have a 350 30 over.. Parked it over the winter in the garage. Pulled it out to start for Spring/Summer and now it won't idle properly and it is backfiring and flames came out of the carb. : ( Before it was parked it ran perfect and why I am stumped. Gonna try the plugs and wires first and then the distributor.. any other suggestions??
Thanks guys

I'd suggest leaving the timing alone NOW, unless you changed it OVER THE WINTER. If YOU didn't change it, then most likely, NO ONE ELSE did either. Messing with it will just create one more thing you have to put back like it was whenever you find The Real Problem.
Check the dist cap & rotor for moisture and carbon tracking.

Checking the spark plugs and found a dead one which was replaced. Wasn't able to get to them all as the Headers are in the way of a couple.. Do the headers have to be removed? I haven't touched the timing yet, It was running perfect when parked. So frustrating, just pulled it out for the year, threw on the insurance and now this.. .

Dont get frustrated just some spark plugs. For most headers you can take out all the plugs using a tool like this

Thank you so much for the link with the tools.. I knew there had to be something. All the part places I go to are clueless. Doesn't help I don't know what the engine came out of.. they look at me like i'm speaking a different language.. Thanks everyone! Super helpful

Like Sofa said, I wouldn't mess with the timing. If it isn't the spark plugs then check the ICM and Coil.
Re: 350 bored 30 over 4 bolt main
I won't touch the timing. I"m hoping its the plugs and or distributor. If its not that I will probably have to find someone to come and have a look at it for me.. I can do basic but... I have to find someone decent here in Edmonton who won't rape me for repairs. I've attached the spec sheet of it in case that helps?

Goofy question but what kind of fuel did you leave sitting in it? If it was an ethanol blend or just old it might have gummed up the carburetor, making it not deliver fuel correctly and simultaneously fouling plugs/causing a pyrotechnic show.

For the record, I said check the base timing, not change it. ;-)
The reason I say it, is because I've seen where the hold down clamp loosened up somehow over winter and on 1st crank with cold oil it moved the ole sparker. Rare but does happen.
As said above, def check the cap/rotor for moisture and the plugs too.

Not a silly question.. I run premium high octane (92) It was parked in November until April. What gets me is it ran perfect before parking. Just went an filled it again as the tank was quite low... Not too familiar with carbs unfortunately. My son talked me into getting this thing I just wanna go for a rip.. hahaha.. I do have the fancy socket set? on its way this afternoon, so hopefully be able to get at the rest of those spark plugs.

Yeah, that's true. That happened to me once with it shifting, so I now have a marker line across the clamp. If the line "lines up" I know it hasn't moved.
