Drainig fuel without dropping the tank?

I have an 89 V6 Bird with a tank full of 10 year old fuel. Can I siphon it easily, and are there any tips you might suggest?

12v electric fuel transfer pump kit. There are a lot of options on Amazon for them. You could also get the hand pump style and some hose.

Re: Drainig fuel without dropping the tank?

I used a harbor freight manual fuel pump. I couldn’t get the last few gallons out. The baffles make it quite difficult.

Re: Drainig fuel without dropping the tank?

I used a hand-pump and pulled the fuel from the fuel line connection at the tank...

Re: Drainig fuel without dropping the tank?

I bought a $10 12v pump off AMZ and will try pulling from the fuel line connection at the tank. Thanks for the great replies.

Re: Drainig fuel without dropping the tank?

My 12v pump was able to suck maybe two gallons from the filler neck. I wasn't able to get any fuel to flow through the old fuel filter. I used a hose barb attached to the filter and got nothing out that way. I'm still working on it.

Re: Drainig fuel without dropping the tank?

Detach the hose somewhere in the back and drain into gas cans. Jump the fuel pump relay to pump out fuel. Do it outdoors and don't be under the vehicle or anywhere near that gas can when you turn on the pump. Don't need to become burn victim.

Re: Drainig fuel without dropping the tank?

Yeah, you don't suck it out from the filler neck. You suck it out from the fuel line connection underneath the car...

Re: Drainig fuel without dropping the tank?

If the factory fuelpump works, you can unhook the fuel filter, put rubber line on pipe into gas can and jump the relay to kick on the pump

We attempted this today. Apparently it has a dead fuel pump. I have repaired lots of chewed up wiring so far, so its unclear if it a pump or wiring issue at this point.
It looks like we are dropping the tank on Tuesday.

Re: Drainig fuel without dropping the tank?

You do if you have a dead pump. The metal lines coming off the top of the tank are not easy to get a pump on unless you cut them. and then you are now pulling through a motor and a possibly full of junk filter sock.

You can do it from the filler neck pretty easily. Not 100% comes out, but it sure makes it lighter when you are pulling it out from the car above your head

Re: Drainig fuel without dropping the tank?

I finally dropped the tank today and it was a complete mess. I'm replacing the tank and fuel pump assembly entirely. Pics to follow. Thanks for all the replies.

Re: Drainig fuel without dropping the tank?

Delphi still makes the complete fuel pump module assembly for fuel injected V6 3rd gen F-body cars. They don't make one anymore for V8 or carbureted cars

DELPHI HP10266 | Fuel Pump Module Assembly| 1985 to 1989 2.8L V6 & 1990 to 1992 3.1L V6 | F-body Camaro & Firebird | Rock Auto

These are on Wholesaler Closeout for $73.79.

Did you end up getting that Delphi fuel pump module assembly I linked from Rock Auto?

Re: Drainig fuel without dropping the tank?

Did it seem like a quality sending unit and hanger assembly? Is the pump quiet?

Re: Drainig fuel without dropping the tank?

The pump is silent. The fit was almost exact, an extra inch or two of rubber line was all that was needed. I had no other issues.
