Small screw in front of IAB, CC Q-Jet...

...what is this, and how crucial of an adjustment is it? I can't find a direct reference to it in either of my tech manuals.
It's right in front of the IAB, kinda recessed into the lower part of the raised casting; on a front-to-back perspective it's in between the rich stop and IAB.
Anyway, I saw this adjustment screw shaking around while the car was running, so I put my MCS adjustment tool on it and turned it clockwise. The engine tried to stall, so I turned it back until the engine recovered.
When I had the airhorn off a few months back I didn't really pay attention to what it did, so can someone fill me in here?

Sorry about that. IAB=Idle Air Bleed, the large screw in the middle of that raised casting which is just in front of the primaries on the Q-Jet (this much I know!!) I'm trying to figure out what the smaller adjustment screw is that's just in front of the Idle Air Bleed screw. I may as well just pull the air horn and see what it contacts

It's the rich-stop for the primary metering rods.

Maybe this will help. On the attachment, where I typed "this thing", is what i'm asking about.

The "thing" is the rich stop.

Try turning it counter-clockwise as far as it will go, then turn it about 5 turns CW from there. That should put it into range. After you do that, adjust the IAB until the car idles right, because moving the rich stop will drastically affect the IAB.

What is marked "rich stop" on the pic is actually the lean stop.

Wow...in that case my carb book is seriously messed up!! It had me thinking it the other way around. Even had a picture of the lean stop being adjusted, with the caption "Using a special tool to adjust the rich stop screw on four-point systems"....unless the four point and two-point is different.
But, since now I know that I turned the wrong screw, how should I set this lean stop? When I removed the plug, it was totally bottomed out clockwise. Is that right?
BTW, thanks for your help guys; if our paths ever cross the beers are on me!

Sorry for the long reply time.

Yes, RB got it right. He's been making a habit of coming up with the right answer, as usual.

I should have given some more information last time I posted so there was no confusion.

In the future you gotta trust me, man. When I post an answer about a QJet you can pretty much take it to the bank. I promise. I've been at it for almost 20 years with these *** forsaken carbs. I won't steer you wrong.

I MAY, however, give you a little less explanation than you would like, depending on how busy I am at work.

I suspect your tuning efforts will meet with greater success from today forward. Good luck with it!

Damon, it's cool; I just thought that I wasn't giving a good explanation, which is why I did the pic. You and RB have both been very helpful to me in my past few posts, so of course I trust in both your expertise. No harm no foul?

No problem at all. Just want to make sure you get the carb running right. Good luck with it.
