ok i was talking to my professor in school and he said that the timing is too advanced

what is an ideal timing setting for a 305 with no CC?

Shoot for 8* BTDC to start with. Make sure you have the vacuum advance line disconnected while setting timing and keep the idle speed low (600 RPMs max) so that the centrifugal advance system is not kicking in any advance while setting timing or you'll never get a correct setting.

What kind of distributor is in the car now? If you ditched the computer controlled carburetor you must also ditch the computer controlled distributor. Once the ECM sees that various emissions devices have been removed (including the cc-carb) it will go into "limp home" mode and supply the cc-distributor with a very weak advance curve. You won't make any power, although it should still idle and drive acceptably.

If you use the computer controlled distiributor but don't plug it into the computer you will get NO advance whatsoever. It may idle OK but it'll be a total pig to drive.

ok, i checked out the timing----i couldn't figure it out because i didnt see any numbers........

it just had a white dot on the harmonic balancer and like a jagged piece of metal with a groove in it.........

i'm assuming that there is a special way to read this......

can anybody help me out?

if it helps, the white dot was to the left of the groove
