I need help with my carb!

I have an 87 Firebird Formula. My choke light constantly stays on at all times. When I turn the car off it continues to diesel for a long time. I just got a tune-up and the car would stall so I adjusted the timing higher so it would not stall. What should I do about this problem?

Sounds like the choke thermostat is bad/disconnected.

Does the choke open when the car is warm??

Does it idle higher than normal??

Seem to be running rich??

All the symptoms you stated could be part of the choke problem.

I would make sure its hooked up and you have 12v at the choke coil before replacing it.

I have an '87 carborated camaro with an electric choke. There is 12v at the choke coil connector, but when ever a load is placed on it (connecting it the choke coil) the voltage drops next to nil. I had a mechanic at a local dealer tell me he's seen once in while this condition, caused be the choke power being disrupted at the oil sending unit. My question is, "Where does the power come from that supplies the choke? I know it's keyed (12v when ignition is on), but where is the source and what components does it supply?

On my '87 camaro, the choke light only illuminates with starting the car. When should it come on, if at all? What triggers it to come on?

My choke light stays on when ever I ground that stinking wire on the manifold... Check the fuse under the dash. Mine also makes this annoying eeeeeeeehehhhhhhh sound too...

Don;t know if that is your problem, but worth a check. If it isn't working right (ie- staying closed) it could cause it to stay closed and be over rich, then it might desel.

For y'alls info the CHOKE light is also your electrical short light. if, while the car is running, that light is on it means you have a dead short usually at the alternator. The light is suppose to come on when you have the key on then when you start the car it will turn off. Unless it's broke.

I recently had a S10 that had the same problem. (12v with no load but nothing with the choke wire connected)

Found a bad choke relay. It was mounted on the firewall (dr. side) next to the fender.

I show a choke relay in my 86 Camaro GM manual but I don't know if its the same in a 87.

In the wiring diagrams, I can't find a choke heater relay for the '87. For now, I have just wired it to a switched 12v source until I find time to trace down the problem.
