TPI on a previously carb'd motor

I am building a 383 stroker out of a 350 that was originally in a 79 z28. Will the TPI from a thirdgen fit on the carb'd motor? IF so how? I come from the land of imports, and I'm learning about camaro's and the such. Please help any way you can.

Yes, a TPI from a thirdgen will fit on that engine! If I were building a 383 FI setup I would just buy the Mini Ram setup!! With the Mini Ram you're looking at 100 more HP and an extra 1000 rpms than you would with a TPI setup!! The TPI intake is restrictive too as well as the plenum so you'd be better off buying an aftermarket TPI setup! However, if you still wish to use a thirdgen TPI setup here is what you'll need to do the swap!!

1. Tpi intake, plenum, runner, throttle body, and fuel rails
2. 8 fuel injectors (might come with the TPI setup if you find a used one...for a 383 I would personally go with 24 lb/hr SVO injectors)
3. A TPI wiring harness (you can get a Painless Wiring harness....it's not "painless" by any mean...just the brand name)
4. A TPI ECM to match the TPI setup....the proper TPI ECM depends on whether the TPI setup you get/have is for MAF or speed density AND whether the TPI has the "9th injector" or not
5. An inline fuel pump for TPI.....a TPI setup requires A LOT of fuel....much more than a carb! TPI cars came from the factory with the fuel pump inside the gas tank!

All in all you're looking at A LOT of work to do this swap...much more than doing the reverse swap (TPI to CARB)!! You're probably going to need to buy fuel line as well and redo your fuel lines!

Let me know if you still decide to do the swap and how it's going!!

What about swapping in a carb'd motor? Is that easier? I don't mind doing a carb. My dad knows how to tune them anyways. Also, is the summit 383 kit any good? If not, advice on which kits are good and cost.
Thanks for the info ,
John

If you're swapping the engine into a vehicle that was previously carbed then yes, it'll be much much easier to do that than TPI!! Much cheaper too! Tpi can produce power but you're going to put a lot of money into it! You can give a carbed engine the same power for less money!! Even if you're not looking for performance, in your case it'll still be cheaper to stick with the carb!!

I just so happen to be swapping to a 383 myself!! The best 383 kit I've found is from powerhouse out of california!! $799 for a kit COMPLETELY BALANCED with everything you'll need minus the cam.....pistons, rods, bearings, a brand new fly wheel, brand new balancer, and a brand new 383 crank! Everything a basic engine kit would come with....and then some!! Powerhouse engine kits were ranked at the top in a recent "Engine Kit Comptetition" article I read about in one of the many parts catalogs I read!! Powerhouse has a web site but the only info you can get on the site is their email address and phone number.....they'll send you a catalog if you email them!!

CAUTION: If you have emissions inspection/testing in your area, a carbed engine in a factory injected car will not make the cut. Technically, an older engine in a newer chassis is not allowed. Practically, they won't know the difference between a '79 block and an '88 block, for instance. But, the induction/exhaust/emissions control equipment must conform to the model of chassis or engine, whichever is later.

Five7Kid is right! But if you're putting the engine back into the '79 Z28 then you have nothing to worry about!! As a matter of fact, if the car is 1982 or older then you have nothing to worry about!! If it's '83 or newer then you gotta be careful! I don't know how emissions/inspections are there in TX but here in MO we get away with practically everything! 9 times out of 10, the inspection place doesn't even pop the hood open here in MO....and 8 times out of 10 they don't look under the car either! Usually they check lights, horn and wiper! That's it!! No smog testing here in MO either! Somehow I doubt you're gonna be as lucky there in TX!!

Yeah, I lived in St. Louis for 11 years. My dad used to tell me emissions were pretty lax. He had a 454 Trans Am and he never had any trouble. Where abouts is the town you live?
