Convertible top release

My 87 iroc convertible has a problem with the top release: it does not work. I checked the switch and even tryed anoter one but with same results. Does anyone have any ideas about what could be wrong? Also does anyone have any schematics on this?

release

I am assuming you mean the tonneau cover release mechanism...

That would be the hard piece that pops up so you can lower the top then covers the top

I too am looking for the wiring diagram for '88.

The center switch in your console controls a solenoid/relay under the console that applies power to the 2 solenoids (one on each side) that actually releases the 'J' hooks that hold the tonneau down.

My problem is, the under console relay 'fires' but no 12volts appears to be coming to the relay. The rear solenoids appear to be OK in that the red wire from each ties together (continuity checked)

It then disappears into the body of the car and I don't know where it goes from there....

Also need to know where 12 volts comes from (other than the obvious-----FUSE) that should be relayed to the solenoids.

Let us know if you find anything...

My tonneau caover stopped working for a while as well, turned out that my trunk pulldown motor was cracked not sealing the trunk completely. There is a kill switch on the hatch mechanism that won't allow you to release the tonneau cover if the trunk is open. Check to make sure the kill switch is operating correctly, or if you have a cracked pulldown motor housing that may be interfiering with the kill switch. A used motor fixed my problem, but for a while I just by passed the kill switch.

kill switch

Answered my own question....the kill switch is a white switch on the lower left side of the hatch pull down....looking at it from the top.

It is attached to an 'L' shaped bracket. There is a connector attached to it that has one red wire and one black wire. The switch is a normally open switch (which means that when the switch is NOT depressed, it is open and NOT making contact of the red wire to the black wire). Therefore, when your trunk lid is closed, it DOES depress the switch which completes the circuit allowing the tonneau cover to be released.

The black wire comes off of the relay under your console. When you depress your tonneau release switch, 12 volts is applied to the black wire from the relay. (Be sure that the switch actually gets depressed when the hatch goes down....manually activate the hatch pull down and observe the kill switch....or put an ohmmeter on the leads and activate the hatch pull down)

This wire leaves the console, is run UNDER the driver's seat to the side of your car and travels back to the pillar post, up by your speaker, into the trunk.

The red wire is attached to the release solenoids...it goes to the passenger side in black plastic wire harness. Just above your passenger side speaker, it has a splice where another red wire splits off and goes under the rear seat bottom under the carpeting to the driver's side solenoid.

I had this problem too.

I had this problem too. I found out about the kill switch in a diagram that came with a repair manual on disk. When I looked at my pull down motor I found the loose wire. Plugged it in and it worked like a charm.

It sure is nice hitting the switch instead of having to pull the loops...

I have almost always had to physically push down on the tonneau cover and push the release switch to get the tonneau cover to release. I'm sure it's an adjustment issue but the car has 210K on the clock and everything still works, so I don't mess with what works. ( I did replace the switch with a 92 hatch release switch many moons ago).
I also ran into the trunk release and tonneau cover problem. I inadvertantly messed the ground wire up on the trunk release. The tonneau cover would not release until I fixed the trunk.

Just an update on my car. I finally got my lazy a$$ out to check my car as the weather finally broke for a while here. Zedder, I owe you MUCH thanks, as I have the same exact problem as you. Opened up the back and found that my pull down motor is cracked too! Well, I adjusted on the bracket some, and now my tonneau release is working!!!:lala: The "saftey pin switch" was no where near where it needed to be, re-adjusted it, and now it works like a charm!! Now all I have to do is replace the cracked motor, and I'll be good to go for another 14 years!! Thanks again Zedder for pointing me in the right direction, your'e the man!!:hail:
