4th gen tops: electric ?

I was at the yard the other day looking around and i saw a 98 camaro that was gutted, in the trunk i saw a compressor with some lines that went to a pnematic pump, i wasnt really aware they were electric tops, maybe this can be converted over to our cars, provided there was a lift for the tonneau...... the pump had an SLP sticker on the side......

This is one of the many things that make the 4th gen a better convertible than our 3rds. I really wish our cars came with a power top. My buddy had a 95 Z28 and that was a nice car to ride in. No squeaks or rattles , top up or down. Gm smartened up and actually built the 4th gen converts on the assembly line along side the coupes. They were made with thicker floor pan steel and rockers I believe, they don't flex as much as ours do. Of course having an LT1 or LS1 also helps out. Too bad they are not as nice looking as our cars or I'd probably have one. The big thing in the looks department is having the tonneau cover like we do. Makes things nice and tidy when the top is down. The 4th gen has a tonneau cover but its a 3 piece thing and has to be put on manually. I have a feeling that it wouldn't be a neasy thing to ge t the tonneau cover to raise automaticlly.....

4th gen: Plus: Glass rear window and powered top. Minus: Lacks a rigid tonneau to cover the top when down. The folded top looks ugly IMO. The soft tonneau cover is a hassle to install and has to be removed before the powered top is actuated.

3rd gen: Plus: Has a rigid tonneau that nicely covers the top. If you're practised at it, the time to raise or lower the manual top is quicker than the powered top. Minus: Plastic rear window, not powered top (IMO only an issue if you're a Female and have trouble lifting the manual top).

An aftermarket top with glass window is available if you're willing to settle for a smaller window.

Overall a Thirdgen's rigid tonneau cover trumps the powered top and glass window.

I like getting up close and personal with my manual top. Down, or up, in a flash. Car is nice and tight and rattle free too. What more could I ask for.

I've owned a variety of covertibles and I have to say, I likethe power tops. Still, I can get the top up and down faster on my third gen than any of the others before. That list:
  • '81 MGB: Takes forever to get up and down with numerous snaps and hooks. Leaky beyotch!
  • 96 Mustang (rental) - Nice and easy operation and if you are good you can put the top down while rolling but pulling up the e-brake just a little.
  • '72 Cadillac Eldorado - All power, slow as Christmas.
