Yes, you can get a Firebird or Camaro with TPI 305 or 350. None of the convertibles got 350s though, only 305s. And if you want a stick, you were limited to the 305 as well.

True and kinda sad.

The basic reason for this is that they didn't think that when they removed the roof, which was a source of a great deal of the frame's rigidity, the frame could handle the power of a 350. Without SFC's and other stiffening devices, the convertile 3rd gen is like a wet noodle.

There are lots of Firebird convertibles with 305TPI engines. And I've seen a few 'verts with 5-speeds too. Not many, at least 4-5.

Vert with a TPI (auto). It's actually the stock engine in every convertible trans-am, not sure why you've never seen one.

My car came stock with a 305 TBI 5 speed . I am not sure if you could get a TPI 5 speed though . Surely someone knows that exact answer on here though .

Nobody is contradicting anyone. You asked a question that is kind of open ended by not being specific. The red TA came from the factory with a 305 TPI, 5-speed. Here's the break down:

FIREBIRD convertibles could be had with the V6 or TBI 305, either manual or automatic

TRANS AM convertibles could only be had with the TPI 305, either manual or automatic. (Export models might have a TBI, I know the non-verts could)

GTA's were not available as convertibles.

This only applies to 91-92's, because those are the only factory Firebird convertibles made. Any birds before 91 could be anything as they were sent to ASC AFTER they were produced (either by the customer or dealer).

I dont think you will find any customer cars sent to ASC, and I havent seen one as of yet although I'm sure a friend of a friend of a friend has one or something like that. I'd be more than happy to see one though with some documentation, that'd be interesting. I also have word from someone at the Van Nuys plant that GM had a licensing agreement with ASC, meaning Joe Schmo couldnt take his car there, had to be GM doing the sending.

GM's thinking on things is weird, I think my 350 car is just as much of a wet noodle as any other thirdgen vert. Probably more of a guess and turndown on that idea than any real world testing.

Yeah, I'm sure all pre 91's were dealer sent, but if I put that then someone would say customers could send their car there..

I had to pick one, either would have BS called..

Hey I personally called ASC about getting my 85's top cut off in 1989 and they said OK but I never took the car so who knows, they may have said yes but meant no. If I had done it I could tell ya for sure
