1987 Firebird Convertible Question
I recently picked up a 1987 v6 Firebird convertible to do a quick fix up and resell. The car is in good condition and is orginal, it needs interior work and a new top. I was planning on replacing the interior with seats from a 1994 Firebird and installing a new top. The question I am having trouble with is this car actually rare and should be restored correctly with orginal parts or should I continue with my orginal plan. Like I said the cat is in very good condition and is basically rust free and runs well. And what is the car worth, I have no idea.

I would think that yes its rare as ASC only made around 100 of them. Seeing that its a V6 I would really think hurts the value more than anything...
Typically I would think that you could ask about double of what a hard top would sell for. Without seeing it and knowing the condition its hard to really say...
Some things to consider
1) Pontiac did not make and Official Firebird converts until 1991.
2) IF it is an ASC convertible its structurally identical to a Camaro, THe up side is many of the parts are available as they are the same as a camaro, the only differences are the spears that go down the side of the car and the third brake light that are hard to find items. The rear wing is a base firebird wing with the ends cut off.
3) For a quick turn around putting 1994 seats in it is not a bad idea by any means. If you were to hold onto it I would think trying to make it original as possible would be the better thing as there were not that many made.
4) Although because its only a 2.8L V6 I would not think it would demand a premium just because of that fact alone...
5) your getting into the wrong time of year to try and sell a car like this, better to wait for spring anyways.

Thank you for the information, the car is white with a red interior and a tan top. It was given away new in a raffel in Courtland, VA in 1987 and stayed in there until I picked it up last weekend. The intresting thing about the car is there are no identifing stickers or emblems stating ASC made the car. I have looked evereywhere I can think to look and there is nothing, also the title says coupe but it is a professional conversion, the only odd thing is the top snaps to the quarter panels. It currently has 120,000 miles on it and runs very well and is completely orginal.

The Companies that I know of that did conversions are the following:
ASC - Probably by far the most common as they did all of the Factory Camaros & Firebirds from 87-92
Choo Choo customs - I have only seen pictures of one of these, oddly enough it looked almost identical to the ASC conversion
Metrix3 - I believe that they may have used snaps for the boot cover.
Hi-Line Kustoms - They too appear to have snaps around the sides
Autoform - REally unique in all aspects, the car would be essentially converted into a 2 seater instead of retaining the back seats. These definately had snaps on the sides. This is the second most popular conversion around. Like the ASC conversions they were available through Dealers only.
Stramman - I know nothing of this company
