Rear speakers
Hello folks -
So, I was washing "Roxie" the other day (the '86 is "Zena"), drying her off and the rear window pops out. Dang.
I ordered a new Stayfast top with glass rear window, since the other top had a tear in it and the door glass was rubbing the corner through. May as well do it right. Got it in 4 days from topsonline.
And, I thought that since my rear speakers are pretty much shot I would replace them, too. I'm having a Top and Upholstery shop do the work. And, since they are a professional shop, it should not be a stretch to pull the seat and rear panels and replace the speakers, right?
Now, my question - what is the recommended speaker?
When I go to Crutchfield, they offer '88 convertibles either 5 1/4" or 6 1/2". They list 5 types of 5 1/4" and 2 types of 6 1/2". So, I send them an e-mail. They responded back recommending these:
http://www.crutchfield.com/cgi-bin/P...sp?i=20607DS60
What do you all think? Which is the correct size? Since the shop is not an electronics outfit, I want this to be as simple and painless (i.e. less $$) as possible. Please help.
Thank you.
Rick

I believe the 5-1/4 is the right size. This is what it looks like behind the grill. Then I put in 5-1/4 and a tweeter. Half the speaker is covered from the factory.
Sorry the pics have been posted in another thread called 6X9 panels.

I have mine out I will measure later. also depending on what you listen to I would recommend the Alpine 2 ways instead of kicker. price is comparable but sound is much better. also it is a simple enough install you could do it yourself instead of paying them more. top wasn't real hard to put on either.

I hacked up my sail panels and put in a set of Eclipse 6.5" speakers. Sound great coupled with the 4x6s in the dash and the sub in the trunk.

we have a set of 6 1/2 in our 89, We dont know if its the stock size but if you are looking for speakers go to http://www.sounddomain.com/ they are cheaper than cruchfield. lol
they are also great for all of your car sound needs
----------
for good sound up front try these http://www.cardomain.com/shoplist~t~...2520Enclosures
the only problem with these is that they dont leave alot of room for your feet.

My Sale panels were already hacked when I bought the car...
I made an adaptor/spacer out of plywood that I screwed to the panels and then mounted Pioneer 6x9's in.
When I had my interior redone the sail panels were covered in the same material (Oak Tweed) as my seats and the adaptors were covered as well. Now it looks original... The clearance is such that the seat folds down without touching the speaker grills.
Sounds good!

I appreciate all your responses folks. I'll let you know what I end up doing.
jstolz-I had considered doing the top myself-read the "sticky" here on this Forum. Problem is, I have too many car projects (13 cars) and I'm trying to finish a '70 El Camino I have already got sold. Since I'm getting a decent tax return, I figured I would farm this job out and focus on the Elk to "git 'r done".
You all have a great day.

Re: Rear speakers
So I need to replace my factory rear speakers. They just crackle when you turn up the volume. I take it you can't just pop off the speaker grille and pull them out? I tried pulling on the grille and it doesn't budge. What's the minimum I need to do to get them out?
While on the subject, what's it take to get the front speakers out? How hard is the dash to remove?
I've never worked on my own vehicle before but I want to learn. This car is all original (17k miles) and I can just see myself breaking crap because I don't know what the hell I'm doing.
Thanks!

Re: Rear speakers
The top is excellent and the rear window is just a tad smaller than the stock plastic one.
I put 6x9's in the back on my car but that's my preference.
Allgood, here's what the stayfast top looks like, I figured I'd show you mine since he hasn't gotten his back from the shop yet:

Yea he got his from the same place as I got mine, at topsonline.com
No problems with the glass when putting the top up and down. You just have to fold the rear seats down (or at least half the way down) while you're putting it up/down and then you can put the seats back in the upright position when you're done. I think you can get it in tan also but I'm not sure? Check their website I'm not positive....www.topsonline.com

Re: Rear speakers
i bought some speaker panel adapters basically pushed them out farther to put 6x9's in. im going to change to a 6.5 as those give you alot better bass response compared to a 6x9

Re: Rear speakers
well i just want a factory look with a little better sound quality so that means that they are 5 1/4 correct
Re: Rear speakers
My convertible is an 88 and it still had the original 5x7 Delco's in the rear. I ordered 6x9's but they wouldn't fit because the magnet was too big! I ordered some Infinity Reference 5x7's and they just barely fit! The magnet touches the metal side supports.
I upgraded my rear panels to some cleaner looking ones from a 92, and they originally came with 6 in round speakers.
