Pic needed of Convertible deck mechanism
Need some help, I bought my 88 iroc convertible in June and it is the first convertible Iroc I have ever owned. The top does not stay down. that pin on the top goes into the hole but I am not sure how it is supposed to stay there. after going over some bumps, it pops out and if I want to put the top down, i just stick my hand between the deck and the top and lift up. There is some type of release hooked to the deck but I believe I am missing the handle that it goes to on the side of the deck where the passenger would sit behind the driver. Ive seen it in other people's car's pictures. Any close-ups or info would be apprecaited. I know I am missing that handle but I am not sure why the pin doesnt stay in the hole.
Thanks.
Rob

They changed the mechanism, but I think yours is the same as mine.
There's a large clip on the car, spring type cotter pin. Thats what holds the pin from the top in place.

Dont have a closer up pic handy.

On my 91, I have to give the bow/pin a good whack to get it to latch.
If people can verify that 88 and 91 are the same I can get you pictures of what ever you like to compare.

1987 and 1988 have metal rods and in 1989 they changed to a cable system. mine is a rod system (broken).i think Hawks has convertion kits for sale.

Yeah, here's a close-up of mine. But mines also an '89. I would love to see what that '88 rod system looks like.

When closing the back of the roof, the pin not only goes into the hole, but it needs to be pressed down fairly hard to snap it into place. There is a grove in the roof pin and this is where the cotter-pin snaps into in order to hold the roof down. When you pull the release, the pin rotates and spreads slightly thus releaseing the pin and allowing you to raise the back of the roof.
In order to lock the pin down, I place one hand on the center of the roof just under the rear window (directly above where the pin would be). Then I take my other hand and place it on top my first hand. This way I can push down hard on my hand and not on the roof itself.

Yeah, same destination but different road.
Thank's for posting the rod pics.
First time I've seen that method.

thanks guys. mine is the rod system, not the cables. Does anyone know of someone selling the latch (slide) I just dont know why the pin wont latch on the tonneau. it looks intact.

Are the edges of the roof's pin groove worn? Even slight wearing can cause it to pop out.
You could also put the rear seats down. This would then allow you to gain visual access to the whole tonneau cover mechanism. You might need a flashlight. Then have a friend open and close the back part of the roof while you watch. Maybe you'll spot what's wrong.

iroctoples...its fixed. your description of how it locks in was perfect. the cotter pin was in backwards. now it snaps perfectly. if i can just get that slide somewhere for the latch, i 'll be straight. thanks all of you for your help.

That's awesome!!!!
Yeah, unfortunately as much as us vert driver's like to keep the top down, there's sadley the odd time we need the roof up.
