Power Convertible Top Kit???

Hey yall,
Im currently searching for a 1991 or 1992 Z28 Convertible. Im wondering if there are any kits to convert the manual top to a power convertible. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Ive searched for hours online for them, but no luck.

Re: Power Convertible Top Kit???

I had read somewhere that someone took the power top system from a 4th gen and converted it to fit a 3rd gen. But i don't remember exactly where i saw that

I prefer the manual top. It goes up faster than any powered unit, and there are fewer expensive parts to adjust and replace.

My $.02

Yea the manual top is waayyyyyyy quicker. But not as cool. I can do it in 5 sec or less. Power would take forever and add a bunch of weight to the car. I can't see the benefit to it.

x2 on the weight. These cars are heavy enough.

I base the coolness factor on how much the top is down. Not the in-between mode.

Re: Power Convertible Top Kit???

I think if you were to use the Tonneau cover it would be an engeneering nightmare, trying to get everything to work in sync. Not to mention you have to pop the rear, have the tonneau flip back, have the top fold down and then have the Tonneau flip down drive off...

A 4th Gen has a very simple system, unlatch top, fold down into boot, drive off...

The Tonneau is what makes the vert look so good, I hated my 95 Vert and the fact I had to manually install the 3 Tonneau pieces that was stowed in the trunk.

Re: Power Convertible Top Kit???

There's no kit available. Making a third gen top into power top would be complicated but not impossible. A small linear actuator mounted to the underside of the tonneau to release the rear bow. Another, mounted on pivots would be used to raise and lower the bow and yet another to raise and lower the tonneau. Then a fourth gen hydraulic system can be used to raise/lower the acutal top. The real challenge is the fabrication into the tonneau, the hydraulic attachment points, and the fact that, probably, new rear panel would have to be made to hide the hydraulic cylinders. Another big challenge is that, in order for this to work on one button (tonneau release converted to power window?) some sort of system to control and coordinate all these motors would have to be made. The costs would probably be in the 1500 to 2000 dollar range. So, is it worth it? If I had the money, I'd do it to mine. The fact is that the ONLY thing that really annoys me about my vert is the power thing. Someday...

Re: Power Convertible Top Kit???

I would bet your a little off in your estimate... I would think around $5000 or more for what it would take to retain the OE Tonneau & top etc...
