What has been your experience buying cars out of state?

I am going to look at a vert this weekend out of state. What things should I be looking for or checking to make sure the seller is on the up and up? Obviously, make sure he has the title. I have carfaxed the vehicle and it checks out. Is it wise to check the sellers drivers license to verify they are the person on the title? Get a proof of sale. Any thing else I should be thinking about. I just don't want to get burned by somebody. Any advice you have is apprecitaed.

Sounds like you've got a good grasp on it...

Which one are you going to look at - the '91?

If you can try to take it to a Garage or Auto Shop and but it on a lift. They might not be able to spot everything or anything but maybe you can. Its very hard to see the underneath on your knees and on a lift you can easly see if the car has been hit or has alot of rust. Its worth the $50-$100.
And make sure you have a trailer to take to car home and insurance for the ride.

Every state has it's own vehicle laws. Depending on the state where you reside you might need to take with you a state residency title transfer document from the county clerk office, sheriff or dmv office, etc. to be noterized at the time of title transfer. Ours is called "Application for KY Certificate of Title/Registration", for instance. Both parties have to sign. Be very careful that you have your bases covered otherwise you may end up with an out of state title and vehicle that you cannot process through your state of residency without trying to get the seller to sign after the fact. Been there... Moral of this is, check with your local vehichle registration authorities FIRST! Hopefully, you'll be well prepared.

BTW a proof of sale is not a hand written note. That wont cut mustard.

What do you recommend doing for a proof of sale?
When getting a trailer, do you drive down with one or pick up a uhaul car trailer in the area?

Re: What has been your experience buying cars out of state?

I contacted my state DMV. I was told all I needed was a signed title filled out by the seller and myself to register the vehicle in my state. They also said this serves as the proof of sale. Not sure if I should write anything else up for a proof of sale? I am debating on a trailer. I was thinking about just driving it back home. A trailer and a hitch will cost me around a $100. I am going to think a bit about this.

I would go to your tax office or your DMV where ever it is you register your car and pick a paper for a title transfer .. cause down here .. the sellers sig. on the title is only 1 of like 5 signatures that are needed for the title transfer.

good luck ! I love road trips especially one where I come back with something . PS... uhauls are cheap only if they need to get rid of a trailer the way your heading or it might be more if they dont need another trailer where you plan on dropping it off.

It's cheaper to bring the trailer with you and bring it back to the same place then try and find someone who's going to let you take it one way and not bring it back. learned this from experience.

My state is easy. seller signs the back of the title and it's done. if it's more than 15 years old all you need is a piece of paper with a hand written bill of sale.

Re: What has been your experience buying cars out of state?

I've had good luck so far. I bought the 91 in Boise ID and drove it all the way back to Columbus. When I got there, I compared the title to the VIN to make sure the numbers matched. I had no problems... well except at the rest stop at the Ohio state line when the cop ran the plate on the car. It was from my 99 Grand Prix. I didn't want to drive cross country with no plate LOL. Ohio wouldn't issue a temp tag until I had the title and car inspection. Idaho wouldn't issue a temp tag, just said bill of sale was all that was needed.

No matter what. My opinion would be to look at the car and be prepared to walk away if it doesn't meet your expectations. I was ready to jump back on a plane and fly back if necessary but mine worked out. I'm very happy with the car after I fixed the problems it did have.

Re: What has been your experience buying cars out of state?

Ive bought 3 cars out of state. One was purchased based on the sellers word (huge mistake).
At a minimum make an appointement at a shop and have them drive it there. The shop can inspect it and can let you know of any issues (obviously you pay for the inspection). Of the two I personally inspected (where they knew I was coming) both were exactly as described. Of course digital pictures help alot.

In regards to paperwork title, bill of sale (stating seller, buyer, year, make, model, VIN and what was paid (ie $3000 paid in US dollars and paid in full). If they are going to provide anything additional after the sale (ie an extra set of wheels) make sure that is listed as well.

If getting a trailer I would get the trailer where you live and drive roundtrip with it--must easier to return and its cheaper that way too.

Re: What has been your experience buying cars out of state?

Hey There.
Both cars that I have brought (86 TTop Iroc & now a 89 Vert) have been brought without me even seeing the car as they were on Ebay & I am in New Zealand. I guess the biggest thing is Trust for me. I rang the sellers and spoke to them and asked for heaps of pictures and also you have to think well if I buy it and it all turns to custard & I loose all my money, Can I afford to let it go?.
I had a title check done but other than that it was all about trust & gut feeling. My two cents anyway from New Zealand. International purchases without even seeing car in real life.

Re: What has been your experience buying cars out of state?

Now that I have the car here there are a few things wrong that weren't mentioned & it has cost me an extra $4000 NZ Dollers About $3000US but it is awesome and as I said there are VERY few of these in New Zealand only 2 iroc verts that I know of including mine. At the end of the day if you want it go for it - it is only money
