Heritage Stripes on convert question

I am putting heritage stripes on my 92 convert - I assume that on the rear deckarea they go all they way up to the black piece on the hard tonneau cover - if that is right then what is the correct way to apply the clear vinyl paint protector - does it go on in one piece and just go over the stripes, or is it cut around the stripes, or some other arrangement?

Re: Heritage Stripes on convert question

Good question. Since the painting would have to been done after the fabrication i would think the clear plastic cover protector would go on after the stripe was applied & on top of the stripes?

Re: Heritage Stripes on convert question

The heritage stripes stop just short of the clear vinyl paint protector that borders the black tonneau pad. This is because ALL convertibles got the paint protector, but only a few got the heritage stripes -so the paint protector was applied right after the tonneau cover was painted to match the body color and the heritage stripes where added later on down the line in the trim shop if the car was ordered as a heritage special. If you see a car with the heritage strips either over or under the clear vinyl paint protector, the car is either not a true heritage edition -OR- it’s been repainted with the heritage stripes were re-installed incorrectly.

take a look at catscam - at https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/album.php?albumid=884.
he won a trophy with it.
he went with complete stripes instead of stopping but it looks strong.

Re: Heritage Stripes on convert question

STOP THE PRESSES!
Ok, it seems that I've given you some bad information. I know that I've seen heritage stripes that stop short of the paint protector. However, just to be double-dog sure, I went to my library of third gen convertible photographs to find one showing this condition and couldn't find one. So, I called a guy from my car club (he's painted a few third gen convertibles) and asked him if the stripes go all the way up to the black tonneau pad with the clear vinyl paint protector over the stripes. He said they do. Not willing to take his remarks at face value, I started looking for photos of this condition and sure enough, the stripes DO go all the way up to the black vinyl tonneau pad with the clear paint protector applied over them. When I later asked my buddy why that was the case, he said that every car's trim level was defined well before the car was actually built -and therefore, those cars destined to be heritage specials got the striping immediately after the paint booth and prior to receiving the clear vinyl paint protector so that the protector would be applied OVER the heritage striping to protect them as well. I guess that makes sense.

Attached are three photos of three different cars showing the correct condition.

Sorry for the bad advice.

KRUSS: Do you have more pics of the Trans Am conv. with the stripes? I would like to see a front view if possible. Looks good to me.

Sorry. No photos of a Trans Am with stripes. Don't recall ever seeing one.

Re: Heritage Stripes on convert question

The stripes are something that are of interest to me because I've long considered adding black 'heritage' stripes to my white '92 Z28 to turn it into an SS (SS hood, SS wheels (Corvette C5 17" 5-spokes), SS badging, etc...). However, in my case, I would have to stop short of the clear vinyl protector on the tanneau since I still have my factory original paint protector.
