Fastest you have been in your vert.

For me I've not gone above 90mph with the top up or down. Would worry about the whole thing tking off over 100. Any cool stories? Anyone topped 130?

Re: Fastest you have been in your vert.

I've done 125mph (guesstimated as the speedo tops at 115mph but the needle was past it sitting at ~5 o'clock position) with the top down.
Top up, maybe around 90mph. I'm kind'a leary about it staying on as well. I wonder if it was ever wind tested. Be interesting if the top was as capable as the car's top-end (or more).

Re: Fastest you have been in your vert.

In my first one that I owned 10+ years ago (a '92 as well) I buried the needle at 110 with the top down driving across Iowa... Made damn good time too!

My current Z has yet to see the highway...

I dont know if I've had mine up to 130 or not, probably close if not past that. Been up to 120 quite a few times.

I've been GPS-tracked at 118mph in my '91 Vert. Car felt like it had more to give, but I was running out of 200kph-worthy road.

Re: Fastest you have been in your vert.

About 6 months after I bought my ride in 1988, I took her up to 135 with the top up. I was on a 2 lane stretch south the Tallahassee. The asphalt was in great shape, no hills or curves, and the shoulders wide. No flapping of the top and she grabbed the pavement like a champ. She had more to give me but I didn't ask. What an incredible experience it was; especially passing a farm pickup, loaded with workers in the bed, at around 125. I haven't had her above 100 since - 21 years. My son has recently 'fessed up that he did more than once.

Re: Fastest you have been in your vert.

Somewhere in northwestern Utah/northeastern Nevada I pegged the speedo in my 'vert with the top down. A bit above 140 on the gauge but my tires are a hair taller than stock at 27" so I'm not sure exactly how fast I was going.

Re: Fastest you have been in your vert.

145mph is the fastest I have been. It was stupid, I had two passengers in the car...top was up. Bad move, but hey I was 17 yrs old and thought I was indestructible.

Now with the new drivetrain, I might have to see how fast I can get it up to before I actually scare myself. I'm thinking it would be somewhere around 150-160mph

i took it to that about 110 or so top out point with the top up, felt like the car was about to just lift off the road like when formula1 cars flip and fly

Summer 92, close to 150 w/ top down, etimate based on gear/rpm and running with a couple of CBR 600's. Speedo only goes to 140.

Re: Fastest you have been in your vert.

Is it better to go fast top up or top down? I would think top down would hurt aerodynamics and slow ya down.

Re: Fastest you have been in your vert.

While I was in the Army stationed in Germany, I had my top down going north on Autobahn A3 I hit about 155 with a nice tailwind!! Wasent really expecting to go that fast, but I ran outta gear hitting the rev limiter at 6200 rpm.

Re: Fastest you have been in your vert.

140 in the 1/4... It's geared for about 160 I'd say but I believe it has power for 195-205... Not sure how the aero is on a convertible. It would be fun to do the standing mile or the Silver State race...

I've also had the back of the top pop up... Scary..haha

Re: Fastest you have been in your vert.

Yeah, as the air flows across the top, the sudden drop at the rear window down to the trunk creates a huge low pressure cell. And when the air pressure in the car is greater than outside, and the force exceeds the strength of the rear roof latch, then the rear of the roof can litterally be pushed open and it pops up!!!

It likely would, but many play with the top-end with the roof down for reasons like the one posted above. It's actually kind'a freaky going really fast with just a piece of fabric and a few braces above your head. Many vert owners wonder if it would survive!
I haven't heard of any wind tunnel testing comparing hardtop vs t-top vs vert top vs no top, but it would have been interesting. I think most of us can predict the results, but the actual numbers would be cool for us geek-heads.

I seem to remember an article done on the 4th gen verts and the cars were faster with the top down, like close to a second in the 1/4.

Nothing like going so fast that your hair roots get pulled outta your scalp, like pulling a carrot outta the ground. 'POP'
