Convertible Switch?

I have a 89 iroc-z vert. Where is the switch located to release the convertible from the trunk? can only release the top manually.

Re: Convertible Switch?

There is no switch for the top. It's only operated manually. Two latches up front and a rear pin release lever along the side of the tonneau cover.

Now if you mean the switch to release the tonneau cover, it's generally located on the console between the power window switches . . .

Your '89 should have it here (newer verts can have it mounted on the tonneau cover). It's activates an electric solenoid switch to release the tonneau cover. If this fails, the back-up is a manual pull cable.

Re: Convertible Switch?

How are you opening the top cover? Is there a manual release and that switch has not worked since you got the car?

Re: Convertible Switch?

Chezoom,
Could be any number of problems....Bad switch, blown fuse, short wire, bad solenoid. When you push your switch do you get any response? Is there a clicking sound?

Where can the solenoid be bought? I think I have the same problem.I know the switch and actuators are good along with the fuse.Is it the one under the switch?

Re: Convertible Switch?

Currently the solenoids are not being manufactured...Your best bet is to post a ad in the "parts wanted" section or look at e-bay...They come up from time to time..

Mount on floor Under the rear side panel. (The panel the rear speaker is in)
I have an extra pair of solenoids from a 92.

Re: Convertible Switch?

I have the same problem. The switch doesn't activate the 'noids. But when I do pull back the switch I hear a little click. Is it the fuse burned out or both 'noids not working? I can't tell.

Re: Convertible Switch?

The fuse is in the fusebox labeled LID.There is also a relay or solenoid or something that I dont know where it is?I think that may be the culprit for most of us.You can test the "actuators" for lack of a known term, with a 12V power source to ensure they are working.I would think these dont go bad too often since they are rarely used and a simple function.I am sure someone knows better than I.I want to learn as well.

Re: Convertible Switch?

Savo110 the problem you probably have is your solenoids have gone bad. That is the issue i had. You need to take the rear side panels off and see if your solenoids actually retract when you push the release button..In some cases something will hold up the cable or the cover and a adjustment is required. In my case i had a bad solenoid and had to find a replacement..I couldn't find anyone that would rebuild the solenoid for me.

Re: Convertible Switch?

ok I'll look first for the fuse, then pull off the rear side panels if that isn't the culprit. Thanx. If "acuators" are bad. Would ones they use for door locks be a good replacement since they longer manufacture the oem ones?

Re: Convertible Switch?

Savo110,
Good question...I don't know if you could use them...I never looked in to it but i have heard you can possibly use the style used on the rear hatch release.

Re: Convertible Switch?

I would like to see a wiring schematic of the convertible tonneau top circuit. There has to be a relay that allows the actuators to cycle to open the lid and then retract? They dont just stay in the energized position when you hit the switch or you would be able to hear them go back and forth each time if you hold the switch and let up....I think!I may be wrong. Its been a long time since I had the same car 18 years ago but thats what I remember.

Re: Convertible Switch?

Whoo hooo! Figure my problem with the switch. The fuse was fine and so were the actuators. The latch pull down in the trunk on my car doesn't work. There is a white push switch that deTects if the trunk is closed or not. I guess it's bad when the tunk and toneau cover smashes into one another. So I Jimmy rigged to switch to come in contact with trunk itself instead of the latch pull down component. So now the toneau is fully functioning. Thanx fellas.

The relay is located in the console, behind and to the riight of the switch. It is attatched to the parking brake assembly. The wires to the selinoids go to the front. There are manual releases on both sides. Fold the rear seats forward to find them. They are black, look a little like fishing line, and have finger loops.
I will post the wiring diagram when I get a chance to get to my other garage and scan it.
As I said, in an earlier post, I see this set-up as redundant. The switch opens the tonneau so it can be lifted manually to manually put up the top. Having had a T-top car, I much rather have this switch open the deck lid. But, as mentioned earlier, for some unknown reason, vert deck lids are heavy. Much heavier than the hatch on a coupe.
