New convertible top

I have a 1988 IROC Z convertible and was made in california. I live in Aruba and I want to order a new top. The problem I have now is that there are different sizes and I don't have the old top to measure it. Is there anyone that has an 1988 convertible and has replaced the top? If so, please advice from where and the size or parts number.

Thanks in Advance.

Re: New convertible top

Classic Industries sells convertible top as well as Tops on Line and a few other companies. One suggestion for you, buy the top with real glass. Since you live in a very sunny climate a glass top will not sun fade, it is just a little more expensive but truly worth it. I live in Colorado and it is always sunny even during the winter and I wanted to insure that if I drove on days with frost I could scrape the window-I now have a clear window all the time and it will not sun fade-truly happy with the real glass.

That is a great suggestion. I just bought and installed my top from Topsonline.com, and the product is excellent. I used the factory plastic window, and if not going for a factory look I too would have used the glass window option.

Fivestar, we need to get the cars together and snap some pics!

Re: New convertible top

I too like to keep things original but practicality took over as I still use my Iroc as a daily driver (except in really bad snowy weather, then it gets parked) The glass window is only slightly smaller and is always clear- to be honest I wish they had offered a defroster option as would have ordered that...
I have included a couple of recent pics and a pic of a Jasper built engine that I detailed for use in my 58 Chevy streetrod

I have a new top with the glass window but havent installed it yet. Do you have problems raising and lowering your top because of the glass?

Re: New convertible top

Haven't had a single problem at all, goes up and down without a hitch and I have used it a ton this year. I recall some other posters mentioning that their top 'catches' on the rear seats...I never have the rear seats up so I wouldn't know about that. Either way if the top had a tendency to catch the seats I would just put the backs down...an extra five seconds of work...

I changed my rear top from tops on line but ordered the original rear plastic window, even if I take a great care of it, after couple years it is now faded and I am thinking of replacing the whole thing again with the glass window, but if it hits the rear seats when folding, can we replace the seats up after folding it??? My daughter love to go for a ride with the drop top ;-P

Re: New convertible top

Mine catches on the back seat (4th gen seats) but it is no problem. I just pull the seat a little bit and it is very easy to put the top down. The glass is MUCH better and I have had both.

Re: New convertible top

Not at all. I generally have the seats down but when I have extra passengers in the back all I do is place the seats up after I have dropped the top and there is no interferance issues at all. Take you daughter for a ride and watch that smile break out!

Re: New convertible top

Is it hard to see out of the glass rear window compared to the factory plastic? Also, does it fog up more or are there visibility problems in bad weather? I LOVE RAIN X and will use it but I was wondering. Does yours have the headliner and did that get in the way of installation? My headliner is mostly good except one corner has drooped but can be re-attatched but I don't know much about the headliner.

Re: New convertible top

Not at all, it is much clearer because it is glass-no creases or waviness. There are no more visibility issues in bad weather than with the plastic, the big advantage is that you can scrape the frost and ice off the glass. I cannot address any headliner points as my car/top did not come with a headliner.
I replace my last top only because the plastic window was bad even though the canvas top was in great shape, my point is that it is going to cost me less in the long run as I will not be replacing top cause the plastic window...Go with the glass-you will be happier.

Re: New convertible top

Thanks Fivestar!

You have a good point here, change the top with the glass window! I own my 91Z since 1998. In 1999, I changed the rear plastic window for a tint one (big mistake), then in 2004, I changed the complete to from tops on line with the plastic crap again, even if my car is in storage for bad winters here in Canada, the plastic started to fade and the folding process brought some waviness issues... I only I knew, I'd saved close to 1000$ in parts and labor!!! With that said, GLASS ALL THE WAY! ;-)

Re: New convertible top

Yup I figure I am saving in the long run using a convertible top with glass. My last two tops were still in very good shape. It was only the plastic window that faded/cracked/yellowed. The glass window is only slightly smaller and with any car you own you adjust for the 'blind spots' every car has when you drive it. The 88 Iroc convertible will be in the family for years to come so making a small adjustment to glass is the way to save and be safe.
