'89 GTA L98 convertible for sale

I found this on my local craigslist and wanted to pass the info along. It looks like a pretty rare car and I'm sure someone here could give it a new home.

That is an expensive car if it is a factory 350 car. Has GTA interior and I heard that no GTA verts were made. Also heard no 350 verts were made. Also heard that Jimmy Hoffa was buried under the 30 yard line at Giants Stadium.

It's a conversion car I think. Meaning that it was originally a hardtop car and some folks in california "changed" it. It was probably 20ish grand back then. The conversion was either 3 or 5 grand as I remember.

Re: '89 GTA L98 convertible for sale

*sigh*
It is as factory as factory can get without being factory. All "Factory" convertibles were converted T-top cars by/at ASC. This GTA was a T-top car that was drop shipped to ASC to be converted. Interestingly all of the parts were serviced through standard Pontiac dealerships, and they all had GM part numbers. Up until 4 years ago, I was able to go to my Pontiac Dealer and order parts for my convertible... Did it a few times.
So is it "factory" Technically No as the VIN nor the RPO sheet specifies it as so.
Is it the same as if the "factory" would have made it, Yes, as it was made by the same people that made the "factory" convertibles.

There was in 1989:
142 GTA 350 or Trans Am 350 Convertibles
42 Formula 350 Convertibles
2 TTA Convertibles,
And a handful of other convertibles total of 330

There was also 4 Camaro 350 convertibles in 1987 that were conversions.

Re: '89 GTA L98 convertible for sale

Kinda wish I had my car done now as it would have increased the car's value more than the cost of the conversion. Of course explaining the VIN discrepancy over and over would get old pretty fast. I can hear it now, "Why is there a 2 in the VIN?" "This car is a fake" blah blah blah.

EDIT: It was my understanding back then that ASC did allot more than add sub-frame connectors and cut the top off. I was told (but you know how that goes) that they added even more body/chassis reinforcements to stiffen up the car.

Yes there was more done, specifically behind the driver and passenger doors, there are reinforcements, that were installed to strengthen that area.

That is a nice car. If I am not mistaken, it was listed on TGO at some point.

Re: '89 GTA L98 convertible for sale

I bought it.... is a nice car but not a minty as it seems. Drove it 1200 miles home tho.top fitment is not too slick. Gaps, ect.how can I adjust them? Car does drive good tho. Is real nice from 1foot.I had never seen one before now. Also have an early 85 iroc with 28k miles t top car that is a stunner. With prokit 1 inch lower 18 inch chrome irocs wilwoods front and prostop drilled rears. How do I load pics? First t.p.I set up dart heads roller set up.. any one know anyone that can adjust tops on the vert? Getting stripped and redone this winter... is it worth the investment? Sorry for the question, if they seem stuuuupid...LOL. and tips or advise?need the vert header above the windshield, this one is cracked, and window fuzzies, those the same as iroc?

Re: '89 GTA L98 convertible for sale

Welcome to the boards...
1) If you want a bunch of info email me at okfoz (at) yahoo.com

I have the dealer order logs from ASC, and some other things that I have collected over the past 6 years I will send you. If you share the last 5 of the VIN I will let you know the Dealer order date and shipment date from ASC... I think it is number 135, if it is the car I am thinking it is.

BTW, I do this for free, just get me the last 5 of your VIN...

Let me know.

John

I have the dealership paperwork from the original owner of mine. With the viper alarm installed the dealership had a sticker of 34,276. Petty big chunk of chang back in 1989.

Re: '89 GTA L98 convertible for sale

I could see $24k, but not $34k. Maybe the original owner financed that much from an upside down trade or that was the total cost of financing with interest or something like that. That much money bought a corvette back then. My car was $19,425 and I'm sure that the after purchase convertible conversion was under $5k back then. I'm thinking it was closer to $3k, but I don't really remember now. I can't believe that anyone ever paid $34k for any third gen.

I think you misunderstood me... I have the ASC Dealer order logs... These are logs from ASC from where dealers would submit an order for a new car to be made into a convertible...

The sticker was 34,276..The original owner bought it in the middle of an Illinois winter for $24,280 because the dealership did not want to sit on it for another 4 months.
