More than likely the insurance company will tell you what they think it's worth.

Here is what you do...

go to the following web sites, and use them as a reference.
cargurus: http://www.cargurus.com/Cars/invento...sModified=true

Cars.com
http://www.cars.com/for-sale/searchr...=GN_REFINEMENT

Autotrader
http://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-s...=CONVERT&Log=0

Nada
http://www.nadaguides.com/Classic-Ca...ertible/Values

edit:
one thing I noticed is I could not find a single 1989 Convertible RS or base (same thing in 89) so you might have to look at different years, and avoid edmunds...

Re: what should i tell the ins company my 89 was worth?

If you have the receipts for the extra parts, get those, and give them to the insurance company...

Edit:
They will not pay you for the normal maintenece things like water pump or tires, radiator, etc... They might do tires if they were new...

I would hope they would take care of upgraded things like the Upgraded Brakes, the upgraded wheels, and cowl hood...

But receipts is what you need

It surprised me... My wife totaled our 05 Buick Rainier, it was in really good condition, but they offered me $6400 - $1000 (deductible) I was able to buy one with not quite half the miles for $7900, one year newer...

It depends on what company you have, and the condition of the car beforehand. I was sure they were going to offer me $3500 or something.

According to KBB in my area, they quoted you low book (fair condition) for your car. Effectively giving you $6400 correct?

Whatever you do, don't let them take the car - keep the car and negotiate a buy back. That way you keep most/all your parts that you can use again or sell.

Re: what should i tell the ins company my 89 was worth?

Here in RI the state bases a cars "worth" according to the most recent NADA guidelines. If you were to buy an 86 IROC here today,... they TAX YOU based on the NADA "average" price for an 86 IROC. ( they base the sale tax on "book value,.. NOT the sales price; this is true here for many older "muscle" cars here in RI - they are called "cars of special interest" so they can rape taxpayers that like to rebuild old cars. ) Since that valuation is what the state makes us pay taxes on that should be the baseline for any claim with the insurance company.

Additional upgrade parts would need to be assessed after the NADA valuation is accounted for. So if you never got the car appraised before the wreck,... like okfoz said; bring your receipts for the aftermarket stuff that was wrecked !!

According to NADA; the average retail book value - & the starting point for your 89 Convertible 305 RS with the INS company - is $5700.
