ConvertiblesDiscussed here are problems and solutions to convertible specific questions, including difficult to find part numbers and other convertible tech help.
Yes it is electric. It fires a couple solenoids that release the toneau cover. There is one on each side.
The good news is that there is a manual release. If you fold the seat down you can see those solenoids.
Attached o each one is a loop. Pulling on that loop manually releases the cover.
There are two safety devices that keep this thing from deploying by accident.
The car must be in park (or neutral I think) for the solenoids to work AND the
Trunk must be closed.
Be sure the car is firmly in park.
Be sure the trunk is closed.
There is a switch at the top of the trunk that senses if the trunk is closed.
You can bypass the switch if you have to.
If your neutral safety switch on the shifter is bad it won't function.
Loop where ?
I tryed the nuetral (5spd manual) and trunk closed , key on ,checked fuses , nothing . Now I'm looking for the loops , am I looking in the right area ? Did you get the other two messages I sent you before this ?

Reason: forgot mess.
Manual Release Loops: You might have to feel around behind the sail panel. It had been so long since I had needed to find mine that is what I had to do for this shot.
In the trunk you will find the trunk switch. Some of these incorporate a pulldown instead of just a latch. These sometimes malfunction. Here is a picture of the top and bottom parts of this. If you look behind the Back trunk trim you will see the wiring for the trunk switch. You can disconnect and bypass the switch to see if it is the problem. It's purpose is to keep you from raising the tonneau when the trunk is raised and thus avoid crashing them together...
Thank You SO much ! I sent you a message thru email , I thanked you for All the important info you gave me ! I found no info anywhere in the manual or on you tube , or online about this problem . You really gave me a chance !! Thank You again and I'll keep you posted , Thanks SpeedG !! :-)
Hello again , Follow up on your info worked , I got behind and found one release loop , the pass. side didn't have one , but Now at least I can trace the switch . THANKS AGAIN for this great information SpeedG !!
making sure the plunger shaft was clean. I may have polished off some corrosion, with a mild abrasive.
lubed everything with WD40. (Yes, I know it is not a lubricant, but it often works best!)
I removed the solenoid to body retaining screw. I ground off the paint from the contact areas on body and solenoid. I applied Dielectric grease to said areas, to prevent corrosion. I replace the black oxide mounting screws with shiny (cadmium) plated screws.
ok....after several years finally diggin into this...mainly cause I finally got hatch pull down working and had rear tore apart anyhow...SHOUT OUT TO West Coast Autoparts for the rebuilt up/down cycle switch. But here I sit not wanting to rip the interior apart to chase the wire from release solenoid relay...any suggestions...good power to relay to switch and through relay.... NO power to both solenoids OR trunk courtesy light which happens to be spliced off right side solenoid power.
