Over Heating Problem
Over Heating Problem
Ok i replaced the thermostat checked if water pump and if anything is flowing alright and it is.. it does not have an air dam on it i know this is a possibility of the cause of it over heating but not all the way to 260 degrees...
I also am running have coolant half water I know i know..
thermostat is a 195 i wanted a 160 but a this dick at the auto store told me i was stupid or something..

And you let him tell you you're stupid? If anyone said that to me I'd never buy from their store again. A 50/50 ratio is nothing bad and is quite good for climates that experience winters. If you lived in a all spring/summer area, then I'd go with a 70/30 mix of distilled/filtered/deionized water and 30 coolant. using the non-mineralized water usually gives you a 20 degree benefit in protection. Even with a 195, you should still hang around that mark in temp but fans don't usually come on till 230. The only practical solution is a fan switch or new chip with lower values for the fans. I personally have a 180 and fan switch and it is pretty decent, I always note my stats when at a stop/traffic and flip the switch. Even if I leave it on 180 is plenty warm for the engine and plenty cool for performance. I have the 70/30 ratio in my car and have gone thru both the dex-cool and the green with no real difference in performance (but the dex cool drained surprisingly clean, may go back again to that this winter)

If you are going to 260 your fan may not be turning on or it may be intermittent. Always suspect the fan relay as they suffered from a design problem. Without the dam in place basically the fans or fan will run all the time in hot weather. I would bet you fan is not coming on all the time. Get a dam because it is a critical part of the cooling system and then check for fan operation. It should kick on right after the temp guage passes the 220 center line. If your cooling system is operating OK you should never go much past the midpoint on the temp guage. Don't try to solve a problem by making a modification. GMSPO now stocks a fan relay from a different vendor. It is much more reliable than earlier versions. NAPA has the same vendor relay, it is an AR-279(their#). As far as a 160 stat is concerned it is too cold for the engine. It will always run rich. I agree that the parts guy should have had a little more finesse but essentially he was probably trying to convey to you that it was a bad idea. Get it working correctly at the stock temp, then if you want to try cooler stats or other mods at least you will know that all things are working as they should. Band-Aid solutions always come back and bite you on the butt.

There is nothing wrong with modifying the fan. If you need some help on that take a look at this link it covers alot and is very in depth for all skill levels. Good luck with that, I agree with the others, the air dam would be a good idea. Ironically I bought mine without one on it and it has never gotten above 210. And it is in the low 100's here in Southern Idaho right now. I drive it daily, however when I find me a good price on one I am putting one on.

I run a zz-4. Everything else is stock. This week is SE Pennsylvania we have had temps in the mid 90's to almost 100. With AC on my average operating temp was 210. When I did the change I replaced everything-all hoses, rad., heater core, hot water valve-I mean everything. You don't have to modify the fan to get a TG to run within specs. Most of the people here who complain about overheating problems cannot or will not diagnose and correct the problems with thier cars. Do not pay attention to all the bs about mods to get the car to run well. It will run the best at 195 with a properly operating cooling system.
