Compressor Question

I'm looking to buy an a/c compressor for my 88 2.8liter v6 camaro. There is a guy who is going to sell me a compressor from a v8 with the pulleys too.. My question is will this work? Are they pretty much the same? Someone told me you couldnt take a v8 compressor and put it in a v6 so im not sure. The guy i might be buying this off of said he thinks it will work but isnt sure. And so I thought I would post here to see what ther professical think .....
Thanks

at one point I was going to use the compressor out of my v6 sc on my v8 iroc, I cant remember if I did or not...brain fart...check the model numbers on the compressor if its a Harrison/Delco with the sticker still on it. Barring that...eye ball it...are all the connections the same? the mounting holes in the same place...is it the same pulley...etc etc

if it is out of a v8 camaro...close to the same year, I think you may just need to change the pulley....my 85 v6 and my 85 v8 had the same mounts, same basic compressor...did your car come with a/c? or is it just missing the compressor?

It used to have a/c before I got it. I found out that before this one person sold it to the people i got it from they took out the compressor since it was new. So I am left with no a/c. I beleive the guy said he's giving me the compressor and pulleys from an 89 v8.

is it a serp belt or vbelt? you will probably need to get a pulley from a 6..i think the belts are a different width. Also are your a/c hookups to the compressor still there? like the lines from the comp to the dryer, etc.? is your compressor bracket there....I think the compressor may work at least going by my somewhat faulty memory...but you may need more parts. If its cheap enough though go for it....but I would shop around local first.

Hmm good points. I cant look at the car right now to tell you.. Its 3 1/2 hours from me.. It has a serp belt. I actually have the belt for the a/c and air pump i guess right now the belt is way too long. Apparently if im right my husband said they cut off the compressor... He's told me I could have the compressor and pulleys for 35.00 plus shipping I believe..

well 35 bucks aint too bad, junkyard here charges about 30 and you have to pull it....if they cut the a/c off you are going to have to find new brackets for the v6....hmmm you might wanna try some of the boards sponsors for that

actually about to leave from here....are there any u-pull-it yards in your area...it would be a good place to get the hoses, bracketry and pulley you'll need....compressors run like 60 bucks reman, and 150 new...something like that. so if you can get a working used one for under 40, cant beat that, especially if the hardware is attached. plus you'll want to get a kit to convert it to r134..they sell for like 10 to 20 bucks at the parts stores...so you can get it charged without having to sell your first born
