this was steaming, my car overheated, what can i do?

hey guys in the past 2 days i've been having an overheating problem. today i actually had a puddle on the ground and this thingy was steaming......not sure what it is i've only learned to fix cars that are ancient w/ no a/c and carbs on top. what is it and can it be bypassed? the thing circled in red is what had steam coming from it

I don't have a TPI car with all the advanced Electronics or Various New Tech stuff on it, but to me that looks like part of the emissions system, but lemme go look at some other engines real quick for a better look. I'm sure someone that knows the answer to this will post.... but if not I'll try and find out.

Plain english...... Diverter valves for the AIR pump

They are the valves that control (ECM related) where the AIR (emissions crap) pump puts the air.. one diverts air to the manifolds and the other to the cat converter (temp depending) to aide in emissions.

Unrelated to your cooling system.

are you sure the steam wasn't coming from the heater vacuum switch. Thats the thingy at the 5 o'clock position on your red circle. has either 2 or 3 hoses connected to it. The connectors become brittle after a while and crack at the body. has the valve cover shown any signs of water damage to the paint?

well took a look at it. valve covers look like there may be a tiny leak from it, (possibly) BUT i looked at it, there are two hoses connected to it, and a third opening that looks like a hose should go to it on the side of the thing. you can see inside of the heater vacuum switch...is this opening supposed to be there?

You have TPI, mine's TBI, but I would suggest that if you have an open end off the valve, something is not right! These valaves came with eitrher 2 or 3 outlets, do you have the right one for your car?

Here's a picture of mine.

fan switch

I followed the tech article on this one. Really easy, and no worries about putting additional load on wires and switches. Haven't got the link, but it;s the one that talks about grounding the green/white wire from the realy.

hey thanks for the info, i changed the water pump and no more heat related problems for a week or so now, as for the fan switch it seems to be working correctly, so it's a "if it ain't broke don't fix it" situation. but if it does break, now i know how to fix it thanks guys
