i have an 88 camaro sc, and am trying to eliminate some things under the hood, and heres a couple questions: what is the purpose of the heater vacuum operated water control valve in the engine compartment? can it be removed without any side effects?

This valve is just what it implies......heater control.

The valve should have a vacuum line that runs to your heat / AC controls inside the car.

When you turn the heat on, the valve opens, letting hot water circulate through your heater core, and thus you have heat in your car.

When you have the heat off, this keeps water from circulating through your heater core, and keeps the heat from entering the car.

The previous owner deleted this in my IROC, and my feet get quite warm......I plan on installing another one this spring...

Heater valve and pipes pix

Here is a pic of the heater valve and pipe routing. Please note that the valve is upside down in the picture.

Hope this helps.
Andy.

You can just about see the pipe routing.

Thanks for the pic,but I still have one quick question,,I am guessing that the other heater line that you have sitting up near the radiator goes to the water pump?

On a stock F-Body ( TPI anyway )... two water lines come from the firewall ( heater core )

One runs to the radiator to the pass side tank. The other line normally runs to the heater control valve, then from there to the throttle body on , then exits the throttle body on the driver's side and loops down with a short hose to the front of the intake manifold.

When you do the throttle body coolant bypass mod ( keeps the throttle body cooler without hot coolant running through it ) The hose would run from the heater core, to the control valve, then to the fitting on the front of the intake right above the coolant temp sensor.

Unless you are me and your core blew up so you had to bypass it
