Help with correct Temp
Help with correct Temp
alright i know from reading some posts and the normal operating temp is about 220..my last z28 was about 220 at its hottest, however i am trying to figure out if my temp gauge is busted on my new iroc or this sounds about right..i run at about 150 tops. Now, i have a rebuilt TPI 305 that is really new, all new parts, headers, heads, cam, all sorts of nice stuff..but i dont think that should have an effect on me running so cold. The thermostat is functioning ok i checked that already. any ideas?

well you can get someone with a good scanner or winALDL to pull your data from the coolant temperature sensor. You can get an aftermarket temp guage and hook it up to test, or you can replace the stock temp sender in the drivers side head and get a replacement for the guage.
ok here is the latest...the stupid temp gage stopped working alltogether, it wont move just stays on 100. i have never had to fix this type of thing before lol lucky me i get a new car and all this nit picking crap happens to me

well either the guage is bad, or stuck...or the sender is bad, or has a bad connection. the sender for the guage is in the drivers side head between the #1 and #3 cylinders...it looks like a little brass plug type thing with single blade type connector, the wire that attaches to it is green and runs into the wiring harness along the drivers side fender. make sure it is connected and clean. if it is you can replace that temp sender, just about any parts store should have one, like 10 bucks, just do it when the motor is cool cause it plugs into the water jack and it will puke coolant out. use some pipe tape on the threads and plug the sucker in
see if that brings your guage back to life.
see if that brings your guage back to life. thank you so much for that info hopefully i can get all that stuff to work hehe. not only does that gage go but my gas gage has decided to wobble between full and empty over and over again so many times it makes me dizzy lol. once one thing goes crazy they all seem to lol

before you change the sender, pull the green wire and ground it. the guage should peg at the top of its range. also look when you crank it, it will generally peg during its self test. that will tell you whether its the guage or the sender.
