****ing Cooling Fans Won't Run!!!!

ok it's to ddamn cold to do guess work so what the ****? they worked yesterday until i stopped for gas, after i filled up the motor's temp started going up it didn't overheat though (how could it it's the damn ice age) but no matter what they wont run, the guy who last owned it rigged them to a switch so they run all the time but the switch is ok i can't see any wiring faults, and i can't tell which is the relay just to look at it, advice please i don't think any mechaninc will saolve this being that all they do is punch up a schematic on a comp screen and follow what it says, but being rigged they won't do ****! first thing i'd do would be to troubleshoot the fans themselves, 2 quick tests. First off, get yourself a voltmeter or multimeter. Disconnect the fan, and stick the little probes on the terminals, turn your AC on, car on, switch on, whatever you should have to do to get the fans running, and read the voltage across the terminals, on that little weatherproof connector that plugs into your fans. IF you have voltage, rip the fan out, and get yourself some wire, put the wires one ends on the terminals on the fan (carefull not to cross them or touch them together now) and the other side to the battery. The fan gets 12 volts, should start to spin. If the fan doesnt spin, motor is shot. If you dont read voltage off the connector, then you need to start testing down the line, a bad wire, bad switch, ect, something like that. If you test voltage on the connector, AND the fan spins off the battery, yet not in the car, You, my friend, are in the same logic-defying boat as me I think maybe for me, its the weatherproof connectors themseleves that have gone bad....maybe not making a good connection due to wear and tear....So try those things and see how it goes

Oh yah, let me throw on with an edit...If its the wiring, you need a continuity tester. If you dont know what that is or have one, post back, you can make one easy enough. Use that if your not getting 12v to the fans, just trace the wire back with your hands, and start checking everything for contitnuity until you find the break

I have the voltometer and I'll try that stuff you said out it's just I hope at least 1 nice day where my face doesn't freeze over I can so this, it's funny though I remember the fans turning off when I stopped the engine at the station (i heard them spin down) but when I got home I popped the hood and surely enough they didn't run it's like I pressed something by accident, well thanks and I hope for some good temps soon.
oh and isnt' a continuity tester the probe with the light on it?

What I wanna know is,,,why would anyone rig both fans to come on all the time in such cold climates. In my opinion it's not even necessary, and will only lead to premature fan failure.

because they probably heard about the mod from some source where it was actually applicable, (ie. someone who races thier car) and following the same logic that causes people to put stickers for products they dont have on windows and 3 1/2 ft tach's in cars that do 0-60 in 17 seconds,....decided to start hacking up his electric system

Or, to not assume the worst about his intelligence, he may live somewhere (like where i live, chicago) where on top of absolute 0 kelvin winters, we also have the nice 100 deg. days in the summer too. I assume the fan probably had an 'off' switch so you wouldnt have to run fans in the winter, no?

And a continuity tester...Yes, it's basically a AA battery and an LED.

Oh, dang, 1 last thing I cant forget. Since he rigged it up himself, i dont know how you would know short of tracing the wire...But, unless he REALLY didnt know what he was doing, should be a fuse on the line somewhere. If you blew the fuse, easy (and warm) fix, and would explain why it happened so fast and unexpected.

yea the last dude really hacked this car's electrical crap, it wasn't intended to be daily driven when they were rigged i just happen to use it everyday no biggie, tomorrow should be warm enough to check it out. if only my route to work didn't consist of stop lights and low speeds then this wouldn't be a big deal but i really need those fans to tone the temp down oh well i'll figure it out it's just getting my hands dirty that sucks but I WILL FIX THIS ****
