I will get blasted for this, but my truck has one on it had it turn 10's in the 1/4.

In my case, the flex fan cools the motor at an idle. I would lobe to try a 4th gen electric fan setup on it, but there is not enough room.

Flex fans move a lot of air and cool well when properly setup in a shroud. They are dangerous however and love to break at high rpm. Mine sees 7400 all the time, but it pretty much flattens out at that speed.

I have seen the aftermath of a flex fan that broke, it did not go through a steel hood but it tried real hard. I would never stick my hand or any other body part under the hood of a car that has a flex fan while its running.

Buy a good one(flex-o-lite), and check it once in a while for cracks/damage. I've had my old 82 camaro for 9 years now and it's always had a flex-fan. First a summit brand one, it broke at about 5000rpm--got lucky though, it went straight down and just broke the shroud. It had a 2+ inch crack, then it ripped the rest of the blade off. Then I got a flex-o-lite fan--rated to 10000 rpm. If if want it to work correctly, get rid of the fan clutch and run a spacer. The "normal" spacer puts my flex-o-lite fan just into the shroud--right where you want it

No, it came apart at something like 5000 to 5500 rpms. I just would not trust them anymore.

Regular fans come apart too. Parts break

I had a buddy with a flex-a-lite fan on his 79 camaro. It was a 2bbl 130hp 305. All he did to it was headers, 4bbl and an intake, so he still didn't have much power. The car never saw over 5,000 rpm. After a year or two he chucked a blade on the thruway cruising at around 2500 rpm. No more flex fans for him.

i use one in my 5 speed car. with a 305, flex fan, and a 180 thermostat, my car ran 190* at all times. this is without a shroud, as well. i'm wondering if i'll get a temperature drop when i put one on.

the engine has seen 5200 rpm on the street, and no flex fan issues.

but then again, what works for me MAY NOT work for you.

The other day, I blew out a Goodyear tire. No more Goodyear tires for me A common way a flex fan comes apart--bending a blade.

I'd trust a quality flex fan at high RPM before I'd trust a stock fan that was designed to maybe 4000 RPM.
