Shorter belt to bypass A/C compressor

I want to bypass my serpentine A/C compressor by putting on a shorter belt... does anyone know what length belt I need? I have a 1989 RS 2.8 V6 auto, no smog pump. The A/C is still cold but when it's on the car shakes and the belt drags, it has torn up a couple belts.

Just make sure when you do that you are routing it so the pullies are turning in the correct direction and your tensioner will be able to do it's job.

The length was 83 inches with the tape measure and the tensioner pulled back where it's supposed to be... I could only get a belt 82 1/2 and 85 1/2. The 82 was way too short, and the 85 was a perfect fit except with no tension. I'm going to try to find something around 84. but now after I put the old belt on I'm getting slack just before the alternator while it's running... oh well. thanks for the advice

I got it running ok with the original belt and the wires to the compressor disconnected, plus I sprayed on some Prestone belt dressing. It's not that I don't know what length to use that's the problem so much as it's actually finding a belt between 82.5 and 85.5 - I've looked everywhere around here. Online I found a listing for an AC Delco belt at 84 inches so I may have to order that. Judging from the way the 85.5 went on there, that should be the right length. The only other thing I could use is the A/C delete bracket from gmpartsdirect.com - I'll post once I find the right belt though.

If the 84 works then that would be killer! That way i wouldn't hear my stupid compressor make noises, and i would gain a few horses, which the delete box would mess that up, so im hoping 84 works out alright, it sounds good, thanks for doing this again, i've tried it b4 but had no luck, don't know if it's ever been done? b/c i've searched for it numerous times.
