is it ok to bypass the oil cooler

is it ok to bypass the oil cooler

just need to know if bypassing the oil cooler on my friends tpi bird will hurt it.. it leaks and we cant get a new one yet.

I would imagine so... these cars don't have the most well-designed cooling system in the first place, so I would think that taking away from the cooling system at all could only make things worse.

I don't see how it would. My car never even came with the oil cooler from the factory and it's been fine. Ran the 305 and now the 350 without it and never had any trouble. If I remember correctly the stock oil coolers that were available did a lousy job of cooling the oil as it was.

the stock oil cooler is almost useless, and I doubt you'd ever notice a difference if you bypassed it. I bypassed it on my GTA long ago with absolutely NO difference that I could notice. My IROC never had one and I sure don't miss it.

they work well for getting the oil to stabalise in temp, thats about it... they are not a "real" cooler, just pull it off

the oem cooler is a pancake stlye cooler which gos betweenthe filter and the block, and sues re routed cooloant to cool the oil.

Looks like this. Right above the filter, two cooling lines to heater lines. Don't know if I have a pic of it connected.
