Cooling fan runs non-stop...need help.

I have searched around but haven't found anything conclusive. Ever since I bought my RS a year and a half ago, the cooling fan comes on as soon as I turn the key to the "on" position. Then when I start the car it keeps running ALL THE TIME non-stop. This has got to be bad for the electric fan to be running all the time right? The guy that did the inspection on my car said he didn't know why it was doing that. The car was a southern car out of Florida and Alabama so I'm figuring one of the previous owners did something to make the fan come on as soon as you turn the key. What do you guys think? Is it my cooling switch or something else? I'm clueless on this one!

Ya thats not good for them, eventually will kill the fan motor.
Sounds like the previous owner spliced the Fan wires (some where in the fan wiring) to a 12 v sorce when the Ignition is on.

fans

When I bought my 88 with dual fan setup, it was doing the same thing. I had bought a coolant fan switch for the passenger side head that turned the fans on sooner, (it was a mod I wanted to do anyway) And what do ya know, it ended up fixing the problem, now the fan runs as it is supposed to. So I guess the switch can cause the problem you are having. At least it did on mine anyway, hope this helps, Larry.

my 92RS was the same exact way and i thought someone had spliced wires as well, but nope just the cooling fan switch was bad. check the stick at the top of the forum about cooling fans and i made a post about this that i know will fix this problem in a 91/92 RS.

I just installed 170 degree thermostat a/c delco
and a 200 on 185 off fan switch from hypertech.
I hope this doesnt kill my fan motor.

fans

That is the exact same setup I installed in my 88 Iroc, 170 GM thermostat and hypertech on 200 and off 185 switch.
Although I have the dual fan setup, so mine is only utilizing the one fan and the other is still controlled by the computer. Eventually I will change that with a chip but for right now, it seems to be working just fine, as long as I am moving down the road the fans are not running, I have to stop and idle for a couple minutes before the fan will turn on and if I sit long enough the one fan will cool the motor enough to turn the fan back off. Seems to work good for me. Larry.

All I need now for max cooling
would be to get a high performance
aluminum radiator but there very expensive.

Next project is SFCs I hate the way this car flexes.
and then suspension. and then brakes and then
tires and then aluminum driveshaft and pulleys.
engine upgrades etc...
