*sigh* weird idle issue when defroster/A/c system is on...
Alright, heres the weirdness, any other setting But the max a/c and the defrost setting will not change my idle, BUT when the setting is on defrost/max A/c the idle sky rockets up to 3k on the tach! WTF is going on? anybody got any ideas?

I can't really comment much on this, but I can say that the RPMs are supposed to jump up a bit when the A/C is on...but on mine it's onyl about 200 RPM. I don't recall if the heat is supposed to raise the revs at all.

i know its supposed to jump up a little, But whats wierid is that only on max ac/Defrost the rpm's jump up from idle (around 650) to 3000 rpms and stays there, (in park) and in drive it goes from 800 to around 2500/3000 rpms and stays there, no other setting does it do this....

On the 83 Berly all the heater controls are vacuum driven.. there are 3 vac diaphrams in the system
one on the passenger side near the kick panel, on by the center console, and just to the left of the heater box (right by the firewall, if you look at your radio you go straight back to the firewall and it is right there. If any of those has a leak it could cause that.... chances are it is the one that controls the doors for the MAX side. When I pulled my dash out to change the heater core. could also be the rubber hose going to it. (I did it all out because I had to fix the vac to the control so I would get more than defrost lol)
In fact even some new cars STILL use the vac system for the door control

Do these cars have a throttle kicker? If so, could it be badly adjusted--guessing wildly.

Oh. that is not a kicker people. that is what you call a Dashpot..... no wonder i didn't know what the heck you all were talkin about... Yea. if the selenoid has enrgized and it is not adjusted properly it will leave you with a high idle that will not go down.. the Nice use for it is so you do not end up slaming the butterfly's shut on the carb causeing a little lurch until the engine sucks them open...

I think i know what you are talking about now, however if i am thinking about the same thing, i it affects my idle with out the max a/c \defrost on, perhaps im thinking of the idle adjustment screw? (if thats not what it is called then oh well, It does have ONE wire comming off the front of it, it is on the passanger side, heres a little text drawing to show you what im talking about)

you also have the quadracrap (assuming its the stock carb :P) I got the Veracrap (2bbl verson of the Quadracrap)

I can get a Holley II :P yea, the bonfire idea sounds great, lets make sure the carbs have plenty of fuel in the fuel bowls

The manual, IIRC, calls the piece in question a throttle kicker solenoid, but again, IIRC, Summit or Jeg's calls it a dashpot. At any rate, check the following link for a pic of the Holley version (HYL-46-74):

The idle screw sets curb idle speed; the kicker sets A/C idle speed (a 100 or 2 above curb idle to compensate for compressor drag). The solenoid doesn't have power enough to bump the idle up by itself. Once the driver has accelerated a bit with A/C on, however, the solenoid pops forward enough to keep idle speed up.
