Just put on a 3.8 Taurus fan. (WOW)

Just made the swap from dual fans to a 3.8 Taurus fan that has dual speeds. This fan is awesome. It pulls so much air. I have a 406 with a stock radiator and when I kick on the fan the temp needle starts dropping fast. With the dual fans it would just keep it from going much higher. This is a very worthwhile swap. I got mine for $35 at a boneyard. You'll need a 40 amp relay and a 40 amp fuse. I pulls a lot of amperage. I toasted the 30 amp relay that was there previously. Also, the 40 amp relay was bought at Car Quest. The other part stores had only 30's. Anyone with an engine that runs warmer than they want should try this.

Or any of the 94+ mustang V-6-V-8 work great too. If you want a fan that really pulls get one from a Lincoln Mark VIII from the mid 90's. They really have wood!

94 6speed, do you turn the fan on by a toggle?

Early 90's taurus with a 3.8 liter engine. It will have 3 wires on it. That's how you'll know. One is ground, one is for low speed and one for high speed. From what I've heard is the Lincoln fan is the same part number as the taurus.

this sounds like the perfect swap! set up low speed on a temp switch and high speed on a toggle...

what did you have to do to mount it?

I had to take a sawzall and wack some of fan mounting flanges off and it fit right in. It looks factory. I didn't wire up the 2 speeds. I just wired the "high". It would be easy to do though.

This swap sounds great. Do you have pics of the completed swap to give us a better idea of how it looks and fits. My dual fans just arent cutting it. Right now its not even hot and it runs at the 220 mark way to much for my liking. I have the lower fan switch that comes on at 200 and the chip turns the other fan on at 190. Thanks

i did the swap. its not too bad i made a new harness for the fan and ran it to a 3way toggle High-auto-Low. its not to bad just research. fits really good, pulls alot of air.

7plagues: the three way toggle is a great idea. on your "auto" setting, do you have both speeds wired to come on at certain teperatures? if so, how did you do it?

I raced yesterday at the track and usually when I spray the temp gets up past 220. I used the fan and the temp was less than 180...this was with 75 degree weather. It is a 16in fan and here is a pic of my install.

wow, it probably pull air through the radiator better than ours because of that fan shroud, too. looks like that covers most of the radiator. wonder how well it would cover my griffin.

Re: Just put on a 3.8 Taurus fan. (WOW)

Old post I know but I'm now interested in how to do the 3 way switch with the relays. The switch could in no way handle the current draw of the fan on high speed and probably not low either. 7plauges care to explain.

Re: Just put on a 3.8 Taurus fan. (WOW)

sorry forgot about this post lol, well i am using one of those cheap autozone 3ways, on auto it goes on at 180 with low setting using one of those cheap fan switches. you are correct though these switches cannot handle the load long, on auto its fine, but when i put into low or high it will only last a couple months. because it heats up and the toggle on the switch goes limp....piece of crap. anyway im in the process of trying to find a nice 3way or possibly rewirign to 2 switches on for low off(auto) and the other deticated to high.
