New location for fan switch
Hey eveyone, I obviously have a question. I have a '92 rs that has been converted from TBI to TPI. I have everything hooked up with the exception of the fan switch. I know where it is supposed to go but, the block is an '86 and there is a plug where the switch is supposed to go. I know just take the plug out! Right? Nope! Not my luck, the plug stripped!
. Anyone know an alternate place to install the switch? Any help would be greatly appreciated, as it is starting to warm up here in Texas and would like to finally get this car on the road! Thanks for the help.

The normal place for the fan switch is in the cylinder head on the passenger side... Is this the plug that was stripped out??

I don't like the stock fan switch - never got one to work. I got a controller for the fan with the temp probe that sticks through the blades on the radiator - well worth it in my book to not have to fool with that damn switch on the head.

Camaronewbie how accurate/effective do you find the fan controller your'e using with the radiator temp probe?Do you have the probe inserted thru the fins or set parallel to the tubes?I'm assuming you have it on the upper right as near as possible to the upper hose inlet

When I had them installed into my radiator, we removed fins and installed them (the temp probes) between the horizontal tubes. Over time (bumps, rattles, shakes, whatever) I've seen probes work their way out - just a heads up. With the airflow over the radiator and all, I'm personally not a fan of using it as the location for a sensor. Besides, this really only works for the 1/8" NPT probes, not the big bulky stockers.
I have my primary sensor in my waterneck but I probably don't count.
With a factory-sized sensor, a head would be the best bet. It can thread into either side.
On a side note, have you tried drilling out the plug?

i just spliced into the brown wire at the fan relay to a rocker, then to constant batt. source. i did the constant power so i can have fans running w/ ing. off so car will cool down between rounds

On my 1992 I have the probe stuck right through the radiator, between the fins, on the pass side. Had to do it on the pass side, since there wasn't enough wire on the probe to run it all the way across, and I chose to mount the controller on the pass side. It also has a cap that squeezes over the end, preventing it from coming back out - as tight as it is, I don't think it'll be going anywhere soon. It seems to work great, it even hooks into the wiring for the A/C to run the fan always when A/C is on.
On my 1990 Camaro, I've been through 4 fan switches, including an expensive aftermarket job, and none have worked well - I finally gave up and I just leave the A/C switch on always, which runs the fan always - my A/C is empty, so the compressor doesn't run anyways.

PurpleHaze92, turn the key on & ground the wire that goes to the fan temp switch to see if the fan comes on, if it does then just run that wire inside the car & hook it up to a switch. them run the other side of the switch to a good ground.
camaronewbie, it sounds like you were running power to the fans through those switches. they needed to be setup to control the fan relays.
