fan relay smoked
my car runs the fans when it is running each time I start the car. It is supposed to come on at 180 and turn off at 160.
My fans did not work the other day and I moved the wires around and they came on. When I removed the relay it was all melted inside.
Could I have the wrong relay or is it wired wrong. the melting was on the power terminals of course.
the wiring harness connector and the relay are fried. Its a 89 Tpi set up with a painless harness.

Can't be sure without looking at it but it sounds like the power went directly through the coil and to the fans so they would always be on and draw more current than that part of the relay is designed for....
Usually you want control power through the coil, small current, to control the larger switch for the fan motors, larger current...

Sounds like either you're too much current thru the relay and/or the power connections were loose/corroded/dirty and got hot.
Are you running 2 fans off 1 relay? Each fan needs its' own relay.
Also sounds like someone has re-wired the fans to come on whenever the ign is on.

The fastest way to determine if they might be the wrong ones is to
replace them. Use an ammeter to determine you’re
not drawing too much current.</FONT>

I was running two fans on one relay and have recently rewired it so it has a relay for each fan. So far so good

same problem different set up
Hey guys. I'm having the same problem with my relay except i'm only running 1 fan. My fan does stay on all the time. I even remember it staying on even when they keys were out. It was like it had a mind of its own. I havn't check the amps yet but if I was running to many amps then then what is the cause of that?
