A/C needs a recharge...

Im just getting into this stuff, so go easy on me.

But I'm pretty close to possibly pulling the trigger on my first IROC.... car looks beautiful. But what concerns me is that the guy who's selling it says it needs an A/C Recharge.

Now I dont know much about air conditioners, but doesn't that pretty much mean it's leaking somewhere, and needs to get fixed? And if thats the case, couldn't that be a pretty damn expensive fix with teh heatercore leaking or something along those lines?

I wish I understood more about how Air conditioners worked, but I was just wanting to know if this was a deal-breaker. Remember this is Georgia heat I have to deal with...

BTW I did a search but couldn't really find anything I thought was relevant, sorry, I'm sure it's out there I just couldn't findi t.

Depends on refrigernat

It all depends. If it has the orginal R12 refigernat then its expensive. 30.00 for one pound. Probably need like 3 pounds or more for a full charge.

If its the newer r134 can go to any store and buy a recharge bottles and charge adpater and your ready to go.

If its r12 looking at probably like based on 3 lbs or more 150.00 for freon + shop fee.

And it could still leak out.

If its leaking you can convert it to r134. kit from Autozone etc. Much cheaper. That way if it leaks again you can just go to autozone parts store etc and do your own recharge.

There is a thread on the conversion. Search for r134

IMO it is not a deal breaker. Alot of other things can go wrong besides the A/C.
But you have to make your own decision. Look at what he is asking and try to talk
him down because of the A/C issue.

If you have the shop do a conversion just depends on your area. A friend in Wa State told me like 250.00

But where its really hot will proabably be more expensive. Also time of the year. Summer ius more expensive than winter. Beacuse more demand in the summer.

If it's an R12 system, don't even bother with it and get it converted. And, if you think there could be a leak, take it into a shop and get it charged, they should put dye in with the refrigerant, and then take it back in a week or two, and they can check it over to see if it's leaking. (You need a special light and glasses, or just the light to check for leaks, can't just visually inspect it.)

And if something is leaking, tell them you want an estimate to fix it, and tell them you want to actually see what is wrong, it may be something you can just fix yourself.

I had mine recharged got an adaptor that goes on the old R12 so you can put the new refigriant in it cost prob a total of $50 all together 3 cans with stop leak in it 1 can of oil lubercant and the adaptor to convert the new R134a refigerant in the old R12 and mine still works but takes away hp and sucks more gas but its worth it

If you don't mind me asking, how much are you getting that car for? I LOVE that car, and I am jealous of the current owner, and will be of you as well if you get it... lol.
