LT1 head coolant routing alternatives

I've read the article about the LT1 head swap and plan on doing this along with an LT1 intake. My question is about the coolant lines, I saw where the lines were run out the front of the head. My question is, Is this absolutely necessary or can you still drill the intake and run the coolant out of there. I know that my power steering pump is in the way and I don't want to move it unless it is the only way. Also with the four small coolant holes already present on the head, do they need to be crossed over if it's possible to run the coolant out of the intake instead of the front of the head or can I just block them off? Thanks.
