Water pump belt wheel loose

Hi,

I have a 1984 Trans Am V8 with clutch fan.

The wheel on the water pump on that the belts run is loose.
It moves up/down/left/right. What could be the problem?
I do not know how these pumps are built. Are there bearings
inside and they are maybe worn? How can I identify the cause?
And what is the solution? Replacing the pump?

Please find attached 2 pictures. Not the fan is loose on that big wheel
but the big wheel itself moves relative on the pump and of course it
gives noise.

Thank you,

Laszlo

It sounds like the bushings inside the pump are wearing out. If you remove the belts and the 4 nuts holding the fan to the pulley, you can remove the pulley from the pump, and check the pump shaft for play. The best solution would be to replace the pump.

yea, most likely a bum pump.

Not to worry though, like said above they are cheap and easy to replace!

Cannot remove water pump

Hi,

Important question: do I have to remove the power steering wheel pump
to be able to remove the water pump??? I removed everything now but
there is a big bracket or what which holds the power steering pump and
this is bolted to the water pump. I remove the bolt but the bracket is
still in front of the water pump. Do I have to remove that bracket?
It is bolted with 4-5 bolts to the engine and other parts there.
If it is not necessary then I do not want to touch the steering pump.

Thank you,

Laszlo

You'll have to remove the alternator and power steering pump brackets to remove the water pump. You don't need to disconnect the power steering hoses though. Just unbolt the brackets and move the steering pump to the side.

Re: Water pump belt wheel loose

Thank you!

At the moment I can not see any possibility for adjusting the belt
of the steering pump. Am I right? I do not understand the whole
logic there. I can not see a pivot bolt and so on. If I unbolt the
bracket and then bolt it again then the belt is adjuted again?
I do not understand.

2 bolts of that bracket are behind the wheel on the steering pump.
Can I just take them off? They are between the wheel where the belt is
running and something else maybe engine. Or should I first remove that
wheel from the steering pump?

The bolts you're looking at are for mounting the power steering pump to the bracket. You don't want to touch those. There are three bolts mounting the power steering bracket to the engine. One on the water pump, one into the head, and one into the bracket on the exhaust manifold. Those are the ones you want to take off.

Re: Water pump belt wheel loose

OK, I understand. But before I unbolt the bracket first I should
loosen the belt, am I right? Where can I do it? I was looking for
two bolts but I could not find them. The pivot bolt and the other one.

Thank you,

Laszlo

The pivot bolt is the one in the head. The bracket slides on the other two.

There will be one bult behind the p/s pump. Loosen that and you can slide it away. It took me literally hours to figure that out lol

Re: Water pump belt wheel loose

Hi,

I could replace the water pump without removing the power
steering pump. Now everything works fine an´d it does not
leaking.
