How to Clean Overflow Resevior

Any suggestions on how to clean the staining and thin layer of gunk out of an overflow reservior on my 91 RS? If not, where would be the best place to order a replacement.
Thanks

get some hot water. soapy water. let it soak for awhile swosh it around afew time. empty it. and hook a spray gun to the garden hose and just blast whatever is left inside.

no idea if that will work haha its what i would do. see what it turns out. may work it may not. i would try what ever cleaner there is to use. maybe degraser soap? i dont know i thought i make a susgestion. its how i would try to clean it out anyways lol and flush out the radiator and put in some good coolent in there and should be good. hopfully :P

Re: How to Clean Overflow Resevior

I cleaned both reservoirs from my 82 this summer using Simple Green, hot water and extended soaking. First time they have been cleaned and I am the original owner. They cleaned up real nice. I will look through the pictures I may have before and after shots.

You can get new NOS reservoirs here ....

Re: How to Clean Overflow Resevior

i say its faster to clean one then to get one lol youd have to acturally drive out and buy a new one. and drive back. by then you would alrady have a it all cleaned out and put back in :P
it proably take 2 mins to clean it out.
and save you money to :P

I was gonna say ice cubes. Hot water isnt good enough alone. If you can get a ice cube tray that is small enough, or if you have an ice dispensor on your firdge. Fill with water, put a lot of ice in there, and soap or detergent or whatever (i used Sunlight detergeant, and Mr. Clean works good too).

Shake, drain, rinse.

Re: How to Clean Overflow Resevior

doesnt hot water clean better the icey cold water??
i think it depends on what kind of soap you are using to.
if you can get a brush or a cloth inside there and use a stick or a hande of a wooden smooth and try scraping some of the stuff. tho you only get like the bottom of the resevior.
jsut try whatever u use to clean it out lol.

Re: How to Clean Overflow Resevior

Hot water is better yes, but you wont get very far with it.

I used hot water, Mr. Clean and alot of detergent. I also used a flexible pointy thing, and a sponge to try and brush away the algae looking stuff on the top. But ijust couldnt reach, and it didnt clean very well.

The ice will do exactly what the rocks will do, except it wont break up and leave dirt around.

The hot/cold wont make much of a difference here, you need something solide to scrape away the dirt, and shaking ice cubes around in detergeant water will accomplish that.

Re: How to Clean Overflow Resevior

that's actually a pretty good idea, when I cleaned mine I just blasted it with a hose, let it soak with some cleaner in it and shook it around and hosed it again, it came out pretty clean but the ice/rocks idea might be worth a try. Mine is really clean inside but it still has that old plastic look to it, not white like a new one.
