single electric fan not kicking on - help!
single electric fan not kicking on - help!
I have a 86 camaro, 305 TPI. Single electric fan. A/C equipped car, no charge. Fan relay located pass. front side. No fan switch is pass. side head. Replaced the coolant tempature switch (CTS). Tested fan with 12 volt and worked. Jumped the ECM code reader (A/B) fan worked. Fan still does not come on, and car was around 240F mark. Could it be pooring wiring or fan relay? I'm confused and tired of searching old treads.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

If the fan motor works, I'd hunt backwards and see if the relay is even getting power. If it is, is it outputting power to fan?
Re: single electric fan not kicking on - help!
As 'Stephen' said, check relay is getting power. I had the same problem on this new Camaro I just picked up. Turned out to be the 'fusable link' was shot, I bypassed it with a fused supply from the battery. Tho' if the fan kicks on when you jumper the ALDL all wiring should be good.
Also, I have a similar problem with my LT1 Firebird, fans don't kick on even when its boiling over. However, the fans and wiring are all good and checked out fine.
What I discovered with that one is, the PCM is not reading the right temp, and therefore not turning the fans on. When the car is at 260* the PCM is only seeing 180*, i'm also having trouble communicating with the PCM when I scan it, so i'm pretty sure the PCM is shot.
Might want to hook a scanner up, see whats happening.

relay is getting power. Pretty sure there is power leaving the relay, because of jumping the ALDL. I'm not a very knowledgeable person when it comes to computers,

OK..It is sounding like the ECM is not telling the relay to give the fan power....Yet jumping the ALDL turns the fan on....
Does doing that bypass the ECM? If so, I'd suspect the ECM. Any local friends you could borrow one from their car, to test?

87 be the same? I may end up wiring in a manual switch till i figure it out or getting an aftermaket control system. Any ideas how to wire a switch in, incase I have to resort to this.
----------
It could be a bad coolant temperature switch, I have my doubts about it being correct.
