Overheating Issues 84 Camaro
Overheating Issues 84 Camaro
Hello, I could really use some help with this. I have an 84 Camaro with a 383. I installed a Be Cool radiator in hopes of getting lower temps. I still run over 230 and higher anytime I drive the car more than 10 minutes doesn't matter if it's sitting still or driving up to freeway speeds. I also have a 350 trans that I've tried running through the radiator and separated it from the radiator to see if that helped. I have a 180 thermostat in it. I've tried replacing it and not using one and the result is still the same. I've tried restricting the water flow through the radiator and that didn't help. I have a CSI water pump on it. I've tried mounting the dual electric fans on the front and rear of the radiator and the same problem. I of course checked which way they were blowing to make sure that wasn't the issue. The bottom air dam is still in place. I don't know what else to do please help!!! Thanks so much,
Joe

Re: Overheating Issues 84 Camaro
sounds like the coolant is not circulating-do the radiator
hoses heat up?,any circulation noticed when observing
the coolant in the radiator with cap off?, If this problem
has occured since engine was assembled it could have
F.I.intake gaskets that are installed backward, blocking
the coolant flow. Also if the water pump is electric check
that it is running the right direction-centrifugal pumps
will pump the same direction running backwards-just
not very well.

Thanks for the help the radiator hose both top and bottom get really hot. I can see the coolant flowing and pretty quickly when I take the cap off. I will see if running the pump wires reversed makes it flow slower or faster. Any other ideas because the gaskets aren't backwards... Thanks so much for the help any other ideas would be appreciated greatly.

Re: Overheating Issues 84 Camaro
heres what i recommend doing to trouble shoot the problem,
-radiator flush (if you need to, if youve never done so this could clog the thermostat and cause it to constantly stay closed causing you to over heat)
-thermostat (if its not new, or if its not the correct oem replacement, this can also cause it to over heat)
-temp sensor for the dash (if the block is not getting, or the radiator is not bubbling inside when it says its hot but the gauge says other wise)
-block temp sensor (if the fan still wont cut on)
-fan relay (if the fan is not cutting on at the operating temp)
-fan motor
this is all assuming that your fans dont work, also these are the steps i would recommend to do in that order. But my best guess is if your over heating regardless wether your moving or not could be the coolant is really dirty and needs to be changed or the thermostat, but if only at idle it over heats its usually cause the fans dont turn on, if these steps dont help, then your in the same boat i am (i over heat only at idle, and cant figure out why.)

Have you tested the engine with an infrared temp gun? I would run the engine up to temp, and see if the gauge is accurate, and then watch if the fans turn on.
