87 firebird strange temp HELP!
Ok so when i first got this car last year the temperature would warm to about 200 and then drop to about 170 when the thermostat opened. i broke the air dam off by bottoming out at the end of my driveway and replaced it with a aluminum one i made but it only is the length of the radiator and at about an 80 degree angle slant to push the air up. the 2 panels on either side of the nose underneath arent on right now (idk if that has anything to do with this). but now the car is heating up to about 210 and staying there and when i slow down to about 30 or less it goes up until i start going faster again at which it will stay at that temperature for a bit but eventually go down. so i have no idea what to do any help would greatly be appreciated. thanks!

Re: 87 firebird strange temp HELP!
210 degrees is normal operating temperture. Sometimes the EGR can actually lower the temp as EGR gas burns cooler. As for the Air dam, as you mentioned it matters. This is because the car has a speed sensor generally set between 30 and 40 MPH that tells the fan to turn on or off. If your running an Automatic transmission, this adds extra heat to the radiator, not much but some. old motors get Foul Build up inside the water flow ports of the engine, this slows down the flow of the water entering the raditor. If your interested in lowering the temperture change the thermostate and get a lower fan temperture switch. And the fan temperture switch is also set to come on around 210 degrees and go off at 190 or so.
If your running a stock motor you should be fine, 210 seems high... it is high, but its what the car was designed to use.
