Re: Temp Switch - Accessing it?

If your talking about the Fan Cooling Switch on passenger side Head between cyl 6 & 8, I changed mine from underneath the car. It took me less then 10 mins to do!

Cool, you are absolutely correct! Got right to it from the bottom....connector was shot, so I put on a new pigtail as well as a new switch. Need more coolant though. Will pick some up tomorrow so I can op check. Thanks for the help!

Re: Temp Switch - Accessing it?

my oil dipstick tube is in the damn way

i've tried twice and cannot get to it. no clearance to get any tools around the switch. and im too 'scared' to try and move the dipstick tube in case it splits or something.

i really need to get this done too...i live in a VERY hot climate and it just runs way too hot.

As long as you have the oil at the proper level, no oil should spill out when you remove your dipstick tube, just be careful, thats all.

Did mine, no problems!

Re: Temp Switch - Accessing it?

I just swpped mine out with a Hypertech 4026..the connector on the pigtail didn't match up to the stock wiring..so I clipped the old wiring, added a female spade connector and attached the two. Fan works great now..to great. First time I fired the car up, it seemed to kick on at the right temp, but next time I started the car, the fan kicked right in and stayed on. Any suggestions to this?

Re: Temp Switch - Accessing it?

If that wire gets grounded the fan will stay on as long as ignition is on. Perhaps that happened?

Re: Temp Switch - Accessing it?

sounds plausible, how might it happen though? I took the original wire, clipped off the end, attached a female spade connector and attached that to the male connector on the Hypertech pigtail, and attached it to the switch.

Don't know. Wire runs close to exhaust, could have contacted and melted through? Follow the wire

Re: Temp Switch - Accessing it?

Not sure if it got grounded or not..the hypertech wire was touching the dipstick..and noticed that the plastic shroud around the point where the wires connect had deformed a bit from the heat. Didn't really seem to be any areas touching metal. Fiddled with it a bit before starting up this AM, no issues; fan stayed off till reached temp. I think it may have just been that the coolant in the block hadn't really cooled down much and it caused the fan to come on when I turned on the car. LOL..maybe I should have gotten the 4028 model. Nice thing though, even pushing it this morning, engine never even crossed the 2nd tick on the temp guage (160 or 180). The first mark before straight up (220) never was certain what temp that was ..just knew I hated going above it.

Re: Temp Switch - Accessing it?

now if I can just pin down why my tach reads so damn high. Richmond gear 5 speed and 3.32 rear..supposed to b e at about 3100 rpm at 75...oh no, I hit about 4500..90 gives me about 5500. Now you see whay I had to get that fan fixed I just did a complete rebuild of the rear and put new gears in. According to Richmonds calculator, the speeds I was turning indicated a 4.56 rear. Opened it up and it was 3.23..so something is wack with my tach

I'm surprised that you used that extra wire/connector from hypertech. All i used was the actually Hyper' sensor and connected it with the stock wire and clip. IMO, if your male/female connection is melting(not melted) then it maybe too long and getting too close to the exhaust manifold, causing a bad connection between your male-female clips!!!

Re: Temp Switch - Accessing it?

Kinda had to use Hypertechs..the factory clip was burnt up from years of being near the headers. Personally I don't quite see the point of that black plastic "shroud" hypertech uses..it's not like there is a way of ataching that directly to the original harness.

Maybe not for our cars(TPI), but their switchs are used on for many others:

- 83-86 Camaro/Firebird 305 HO
- 86-87 Cam/Fire 305 LG4
- 88-92 Cam/Fire 305 EFI/TBI
- 86-92 Cam/Fire 305 TPI w/ Dual fans
- 87-92 Cam/Fire 350 TPI w/Dual fans

- 84-90 Vette's 350 CF/TPI w/Dual fans
- 85-88 Fiero 2.8L MFI

Likely the older Vette's or the Fiero's used that black clip!
