fan temp switch

fan temp switch
i posted this in tech general but no reply, can someone tell me if it is the temp sensor or temp sender that i need to turn the fans on at a certain temp ? Thanks.

If it is for the fans, and mounts in the passenger side head between plugs 6 and 8, then it is actually called a collant fan switch. This is the one for my 88.

Thanks, yes i want it to turn on the fans at a certain temp, i dont have a current one because im converting from mechanical setup, when i goto my local parts store they ask if i want the temp sender or sensor? Thanks again

I believe the temp sensor goes to the ecm and the temp sender goes to the gauge, or vice-versa. Neither would be correct for the fan.

ok I now have the temp switch, what else do i need to make it work, do i need 1 or 2 relays for a dual fan setup? this is what came with the fans will this work for anything?

For the primary fan wiring,
the black/pink wire goes to the fan power wire. The fan ground wire just goes to ground.
the orange wire goes to a fused battery source
the green/white wire goes to the ecm if you still have it, otherwise it goes to the coolant fan switch mounted in the head
and the beige wire goes to an ignition source.
The secondary fan, from what I understand from reading here, is turned on whenever the A/C is turned on or the engine reaches a different, higher temperature.

Well I don't have the ecm any more but I can help you some. I have a single fan with 1 relay. I believe you do need a relay for each fan, and they look identical.
For the primary fan wiring,

I just did this to my car. The fan came on automatically when you turned the key to the run position. So I wired it the way I just told you and now it only comes on when the temp reaches 222 degrees and turns off at 208 degrees, the way it was designed. But by running just 2 additional wires, I created a manually override in the cockpit so I can turn the fan on whenever I want and also know when the fan is on, either from the coolant fan switch or when I turn it on manually. If you want to do this, all you have to do is splice into, don't cut, the green/white wire and run it to a switch. The other end of the switch connects to ground. This overrides the grounding action of the coolant fan switch and turns the fan on. I then spliced into black/pink wire and ran it to an LED. The other end of the LED also just goes to ground. The LED then lights whenever power is sent to the fan by the relay.

Are these supposed to pull air from the front of the car in toward the engine ?

whats the chances of buying a faulty switch? i have everything hooked up but the fans wont come one unless i manually ground the switch out? the car was started and HOT

Yes, the fan should pull air through the radiator and toward the engine.

My first switch was faulty. That said, it isn't supposed to turn on until OVER 220 degrees. Did it get that hot? You have to allow for some error in your gauge as factory gauges are notorios for being off. Also, did you use teflon tape on the coolant fan switch. Don't forget that the switch grounds to the head so there has to be a connection. Use only 1 to 1-1/2 wraps, no more.

well im just working on getting the one fan going right now, so im using one relay, the switch has no teflon around it, its a 180 switch im gonna try to run the car to 220 temp and use a test light to check for ground one more time, Thanks for your help

To test the switch, take the connector off the switch and connect the connector to the engine to ground it. You may need to run a little jumper wire between the connector and the engine. If the fan turns on, all your other wiring is good. The key must be in the run position for it to work.

I'm not familiar with that switch. It looks more like a gauge sender than a switch. My gauge sender is mounted in my intake manifold and has a blade connector while my coolant fan switch is mounted in the passenger side head between plugs 6 and 8 and has a round, snap on connector. Bypass the switch with the jumper like I explained before and see if the fan turns on. If the fan doesn't turn on when you ground the connector with the key in the run position then something else is wrong.
