coolant problem

Let my 87 305 tpi run in the driveway the other night and it got up to about 180 degrees. I noticed that the coolant expansion tank on under the hood was clean full of antifreeze. I shut the car off and after a few minutes it went down. could this be a bad thermostat or a head being junk? also the electric fans are on constantly.

Re: coolant problem

When the car is running the coolant expands and when the car sits it contracts and pulls coolant from the recovery tank. That's why there is a hot and cold fill line

Re: coolant problem

I agree. Seeing it rise when hot is normal. If it's all the way to the top of the lid and it's clean (no oil... etc) sounds like you overfilled it.

Re: coolant problem

would it matter if the tank was completely empty when the engine was cold?

Re: coolant problem

not if it was well below the full hot mark when running. If it was at the full hot it should not come below the cold mark. If it does, you're loosing coolant somewhere.
