Carb'd motor running hot

Recently just finished my iroc and now the motor seems to be getting hot. I have the fans wired so they are always on(dual fans). I have a brand new radiator 50/50 mix and 160 degree thermostat. The water pump is just a stock one. The block is a mid 70's 350, it has full length headers and my temp sensor goes into the driversside head. I was wondering if the headers are giving of so much radiant heat that its giving me a false reading at the gauge. It will get up to 230-235 degrees, in my opinion that seems way to high. Any info would be great. Thanks

Are they dual stock fans? If so, I had absolutley no luck with them at all. I eventually got a stock fan off a 95 (?) Lincoln Mark VIII. It moves a massive amount of air and solved all my problems.

One is stock the other is some advanced bs. they both came with car, are you running one or two fans from the lincoln. You don't think the location of the temp sensor is an issue?

160 degree thermostat is a little low, you should get an 180 better for performance. Is it overheating while driving on the highway or in town? Do you have your fans going the right way? It could be your timing is not set right also?

I'm only running one. The fan is a 16" fan and the shroud is only a few inches smaller than the stock radiator. Two could probably cool a big diesel. I dont think the location of the sensor is a problem. Thats where it is factory. As asked above, are you sure you have the correct water pump for you accesory setup? Also the tune on the motor can cause overheating.

Yea I've been thinking it was the water pump or the tune. It has a factory water pump, i don't know exactly what year its from but its older, possibly as old as the block. As far as the tune what i really think is going on, is that i'm running to lean might have to bump up some jet sizes. The timming is set at 12 degrees advanced, the car runs and drives awsome just gets hot during stop and go traffic and when you get on it repeatedly. The carb is a holley 650 dp that hasn't been tampered with. The car also has about 10:1 - 10:5:1 compression. So i'm hoping its just a lean situation or a water pump going bad. Please more questions though i apperciate the help.

Re: Carb'd motor running hot

Are you running an older (pre 86) water pump with the stock serpentine system off your 88?

The car does not have a serpentine set up, it has a v belt. The water pump im not sure of the year but looks older than 86.

Re: Carb'd motor running hot

I was overheating going down the road reaching 220-230F over 35 mph. Turns out my problem was the air dam/spoiler that hangs a few inches below the radiator. A senior member explained to me that it creates a low pressure area behind the radiator causing air to be pulled through it. Once I put the air dam/spoiler back on my car it did not go over 190F at 45-75 mph and the fan never came on. The outside temperature was in the 80's. The stock fan took care of the temps at idle. I have a Trans Am, but have seen them on Camaro.

if it is a vbelt on it then you are ok. the year of the car suggested a serpintine system.
